ABC has decided to renew both The Rookie and Stumptown for new seasons
It’s great news for fans of cop dramedies The Rookie and Stumptown. Both shows are among the list of renewals from ABC for the 2020-2021 season.
Deadline reported the news, listing all 13 shows that had been renewed. The majority of established shows were picked up for another season, with just Single Parents, Schooled, and Bless This Mess canceled.
Out of the freshman scripted shows, Emergence was the only cancellation. Two dramas remain on the bubble, while unscripted series The Kids Say the Darndest Things was not picked up for a second season.
The Rookie’s renewal is not surprising
In all honestly, we’d expected to find out that The Rookie was being renewed for a third season. It’s just always good to get the official confirmation. The show’s move to Sunday nights was clearly the best thing that could have happened to it.
This is a show that seems to have found it’s footing in terms of type of content that works for viewers. Putting the lives and careers of our favorite characters on the line resonates. Now we know that we’ll find out what happens to Nolan and whether people will believe that Nick Armstrong framed him.
Stumptown is a small surprise
The ratings for the freshman dramedy Stumptown weren’t great. It certainly put this show in the firing line, so I think a lot of fans were getting ready to hear bad news. However, ABC knows that the timeslot isn’t a great one.
One of the things that likely saved this series was the DVR ratings. They were among the highest for the network, suggesting that it really is the timeslot.
The network hasn’t yet announced the schedule for fall or January. It will be interesting to see if Stumptown changes nights. Maybe a move to Sundays with The Rookie would work.
