2. Torres came back to NCIS too early

Nobody can get hit by a car and walk away scratch-free—not even Agent Torres. Torres appeared to have made a quick recovery in this week’s NCIS after being in critical condition, and he returned to work with almost no questions asked. Maybe it’s because viewers all know how strong and determined Torres is, but needless to say, it was odd to see.

Fans first notice Torres is lying about his recovery in “Lonely Hearts” when he goes into Kacie’s lab to check on some evidence. After playing around with Kacie, we learn that he has a lingering shoulder pain that looks to be affecting his range of motion. Torres’ lingering pain makes you wonder if he could even shoot his gun or confidently hold his own in a fight like he typically does. The clear indicator of this is while Kacie has her back turned, Torres is seen stretching his shoulder in obvious discomfort.

Then we see something that we haven’t seen before: Torres being on the losing side of something. While out in the field pursuing a lead with Bishop, Torres finds himself in a foot chase with a runaway suspect that he just can’t keep up with because he is in too much pain. It ultimately leads to Torres having to let the suspect get away, but luckily for him (and NCIS), Bishop was able to pick him up on the other side.

When Bishop and Torres finally regroup, she rightfully puts him in his place. Bishop leaves Torres with something to think about by saying to him “What are you trying to prove? Take it easy; no one will think less of you.” She understands that it’s a matter of life or death while in the field, and a lot can go wrong when your partner has been lying about his physical condition.

This is an important moment in “Lonely Hearts” because regardless of their personal feelings for each other, Bishop doesn’t hold back in letting Torres know he was wrong by coming back to work so soon. It shows that it’s going to be business before pleasure if this potential relationship is going to work.

Torres never admits when he has been defeated. But when it’s coming from someone meaningful to him like Bishop, he’s going to listen to her. By the end of the episode, when the team is preparing to go and solve the case, Torres realizes that Bishop was right and he decides to stay behind. He accepts that he is a liability right now and tells the team that it’s best for him to catch up on some much needed rest.

But don’t be too disappointed. Given who we’re talking about, we should be seeing Torres bounce back to his normal self fairly quickly in the NCIS episodes to come.
