FBI ratings for this week’s episode Safe Room reached an encouraging milestone. Here are the live ratings for FBI season 2, episode 16.

FBI ratings were on the rise again this week, as Tuesday’s installment “Safe Room” was another winner for the CBS drama. So could a Season 3 pickup be on the horizon?

The Dick Wolf series brought in 9.20 million live viewers with its latest episode, which got the series past the 9 million viewer mark—a major milestone, when high-rated series routinely do only 7-8 million.

It was also a significant increase week over week; the show gained 0.24 in viewers, or 240,000 extra eyeballs, over the previous episode.

That meant FBI season 2, episode 16 was the second most-watched series on broadcast TV on Feb. 18, second only to CBS’s eternal powerhouse NCIS.

To put that in perspective, no other show on any of the broadcast networks even broke 6.5 million viewers! So the latest FBI had in excess of 2.5 million people more tuned in than the best show on any other channel.

That’s pretty impressive, and though the future of the series has never really been in doubt (given its ratings consistency and the fact that Dick Wolf is producing it), statistics like these ought to reassure fans that there’s no way that this show couldn’t come back for another season. It would make absolutely no sense for CBS to cancel something so clearly ahead of its competition.

In addition, FBI ratings have it within the Top 5 amongst adults 18-49, which is the most critical demographic for networks and advertisers.

“Safe Room” earned a 0.9 share in that sub-category, which was also up 0.1 from the prior week. And it helped CBS be the second most popular network among the key demo; only NBC had more viewers in the 18-49 group, and by a narrow margin (1.0 vs. 0.9).

So while this was an entertaining episode bolstered by a number of guest names—that was The Affair‘s Darren Goldstein playing Mr. Ford, El Camino‘s Brendan Sexton III as Mark, and Vedette Lim from Chicago Fire as a carjacking victim, plus 24 veteran Carlos Bernard was the director—it was also popular. And when a show can be both good and popular, that’s what makes a hit.

With 16 episodes in the bag so far, this season is closer to its end than the beginning. With FBI ratings like these, the question now is can it continue climbing and stay in the nines, or even make a run at double digits before its season finale?
