Keeping the Sunday night timeslot could keep NCIS: New Orleans on the air

CBS has revealed its plan for fall 2020. The schedule is remaining very much the same as it is now. NCIS: New Orleans is remaining on Sundays, following new episodes of NCIS: LA.

While it’s disappointing that the show won’t get to move back to Tuesdays, it could be a good thing for the future of the series. After all, there were a few concerns about the series during the 2019-2020 season.

Out of all NCIS shows, New Orleans ranks the lowest in terms of viewer and demo averages. The second half of the season was worryingly low, especially the first night in the Sunday timeslot. However, there’s one good thing about airing on Sundays: it’s a safer night than Tuesdays.

Hope for NCIS: New Orleans Season 8

By airing on Sundays, there’s a stronger chance of the series getting an eighth season. Sure, it’s early days to be talking about this, but it’s something that fans want. Even if the eighth season is the last, we want it and to be aware of it being the final season. Something networks have received in recent years is making it clear when something is the final season so there’s time to say goodbye.

The move to Sundays offers hope. Not only does it now follow on from another NCIS show—Tuesdays had FBI sandwiched between the franchise—but it is also on a safer night. Sundays get away with lower live ratings, especially during football season.

Something that CBS will look at is the DVR and delayed viewings. NCIS: New Orleans will be available on CBS All Access, so you can help prove that the show has a place by watching through this streaming method if you can’t watch live.

There’s a strong chance that the ratings will slip further in Season 7. The ratings for all other shows will slip during the 2020-2021 season. It’s normal to see a slip between seasons. Sundays offer the leeway should the slip be larger than average. As long as New Orleans remains higher than the last few seasons of Madam Secretary, CBS will likely be happy to keep it going.

On the nights when there is football on CBS, we could see a boost to the ratings. This routinely happened to some Sunday night shows on CBS throughout previous seasons. The danger is when the football airs on another network, but CBS will take that into account.
