Timothy McGee is the MVP of NCIS Season 4

We’re looking back on NCIS Season 4 this week, taking a look at the MVP of the season. Season 4 was a season for Timothy McGee.

He certainly stepped up when the team needed him. Originally introduced in the first season as a guest star, Sean Murray was upped to series regular for the second season. That’s where he’s remained since then, although it doesn’t technically make him one of the original characters—he wasn’t in the series premiere.

However, he’s always been an integral part of the team. Season 4 proved that time and time again, making him the MVP of the season.

We’ve be nowhere without his tech skills

Since his introduction, Timothy McGee was always the tech guru. Specializing in cybersecurity and computer crime, McGee has always been the one to help when anything has involved technology problems. He doesn’t just look out for hackers, but he can also hack for the team. Of course, this is a grey area, one that McGee treads a lot.

It was really only in the fourth season that he really got to prove just how far he was willing to go for the team. While he was there to help with cases in the past, he was a crucial part of helping to prove Ziva’s innocence in the Season 4 premiere.

One of his standout moments was Episode 7 of the season. When there’s a suspected terrorist attack, it’s all hands on deck while the team works with the Army Criminal Investigative Division. McGee needs to use his computer skills to get into secret government files. It’s the only way to figure out the terrorist cell. He proves his role immediately in his actions.

Putting family first and his novel writing

Of course, NCIS Season 4 is when we learn a little more about McGee’s family. We meet his sister, Sarah, who shows up in the middle of the night with the fear that she’s killed someone. She’s sure she’s innocent but has no memory to be able to help.

McGee does everything he can to help his sister, but it means not turning to NCIS. He just can’t put his sister in danger, but he soon realizes that he has to when the case involving a Navy sailor is connected to McGee’s sister. It’s an important episode that reminds McGee that the team is family.

This episode also links to a later one in the season. We find out that McGee is a published author, and he’s been writing books that involve his team members. This story thread comes up in a later episode of the season, as McGee’s unpublished novel is being used for a series of crimes.

NCIS has always worked because we get to know a little about the personal lives of the characters but not too much. Most of the focus is on the crimes. When the personal lives are revealed, they’re integral to the case. And without knowing more about McGee and seeing him in action, Season 4 wouldn’t have been as successful or as fun.
