5 questions after the Burden of Truth Season 3 finale
The Burden of Truth Season 3 finale wrapped the case but left questions
It’s not always easy to wrap up all the story threads on a TV show. The Burden of Truth Season 3 finale did manage to wrap the case, but there were some big questions left. We’ll probably not get answers to these questions either.
Right now, there’s no word on whether a fourth season is happening. The finale did seem to wrap things up as a series finale, but that may have been a “just in case” ending. After all, it would be easy to bring about a new case for the fourth season.
That doesn’t mean we’ll get all our answers to questions we still have. Here are my five biggest questions.
What’s happening to the doc?
The Burden of Truth Season 3 finale wrapped the case, but it was rushed. It took just minutes for Joanna to realize that the was some sort of childhood trauma and for Luna to find it. Okay, it was overnight in the show, but it was minutes of storytelling. And minutes later, the doc’s bias had completely unraveled.
I do think this season could have done with one more episode. I can’t see what could have been taken out to fit it all in, so one extra episode would have worked better. This would have given us a chance to see Luna in her element, possibly with Kat working by her side, to uncover the truth.
It just felt too fast to resolve something that had taken eight episodes to build up to.
Will anything happen to the previous cases the doc testified in?
Something that did come up while watching was how the doc has testified as an expert during previous trials. This was something the judge pointed out when Joanna revealed that the doc’s testing showed him as a cocaine user.
Now that his bias has been revealed, will it affect anything from the past? If it was a police officer being arrested, it would have meant cases would have been reopened. Because he’s just an expert witness, does that mean cases will remain as they are? These could have been child apprehension cases, which we know happened on a large scale due to faulty testing.
This wasn’t brought up. And we probably won’t find out even if Burden of Truth is renewed.
Is it really a happy ending for all?
The judge closed all the cases that were open. This wasn’t something Joanna was after since it wasn’t a class-action lawsuit, but it was a huge win.
However, does that mean all these cases will remain closed? Millwood Family Services will still know about them. These parents could still be on their radar. MFS will still be running in some way, shape, or form.
Could we find out there’s harassment against the previous parents? Nothing was mentioned in the time jump, but it could be something to explore in a future season.
Has Taylor dropped everything with the guy she was following?
Taylor’s story started out with her following a shady guy that she knew from her dad’s work. That led to finding out Mercer was blackmailing people. It was a means to an end to get Mercer in police custody and then to use him to help win the cases.
At the end, Taylor seemed to have dropped everything against the guy she was following. It makes sense considering how dangerous she was. It also makes sense since she’s joined the police academy. But is this really it? Will the guy get away with everything or is this for another day?
How is the police force now Mercer has been arrested again?
Finally, let’s touch on the state of the Millwood Police Department. There were many in there loyal to Mercer. They won’t be happy that Mercer has been arrested. And they may not be happy that the mayor has also been arrested.
Most of them are following Owen’s orders, but there was some pushback at the start of the season. Is that still happening now? Will there be trouble now that Mercer has been arrested again?
Systemic racism is a huge problem in Canada just like in the United States. Burden of Truth has shown that but it feels like just scratching the surface. There needs to be more on this in Season 4 should it happen.
