It’s sad news for fans of the New Orleans-based NCIS spin-off. CBS has canceled NCIS: New Orleans after seven seasons.

The news comes just after talk of a fourth spin-off possibly coming to the network. Is it possible that CBS was trying to sweeten fans of the franchise as a whole with the good news before the bad?

It is a shame for fans of NCIS: New Orleans. Out of the three shows, New Orleans brought elements of the supernatural to the show in the form of memories and “ghosts.” It’s offered some interesting ways to deal with trauma and pain from the past. We also had plenty of music thanks to the location.

The news is somewhat shocking, too. While average in the live ratings, it, like the other NCISes, has been a strong and reliable show for the network due to syndication and international deals. It looks like the cancellation is CBS’s decision, but it could be linked to Scott Bakula’s travel between New Orleans and Los Angeles or due to the showrunners, Jan Nash and Christopher Silber, going to work on the reported spin-off idea.

Could an NCIS: New Orleans character go to Hawaii?

With the end of the series, we have to look at the timing. Is it possible that one or more of the New Orleans characters could head to the Hawaii spin-off?

Charles Michael Davis’s character, Agent Quentin Carter, would make the most sense for this. He has routinely made it clear that he doesn’t want to be part of a family, so could feel less guilty about jumping ship to another team. We have also only just started peeling back the layers on his character.

Another character that would make sense moving across is Necar Zadegan’s Hannah Koury. Considering the current storyline for her character, she could be offered the chance to run her own team in Hawaii. There would be her daughter and ex to think about, but it could be an excellent career choice if she wanted to progress.

The NCIS: New Orleans series finale is slated to air on May 16, according to Deadline.
