SWAT’s episode about grief reminds us it’s all about the family we choose
SWAT Season 4, Episode 9 delivered a powerful episode about grief, but it was more than that. It reminds us it’s always about the family we choose.
We are all stronger together. It’s okay to take time to grieve. There’s nothing wrong with turning to others for support. Those are all messages within SWAT Season 4, Episode 9.
The episode picked up off the back of the previous episode. Each team member needed to figure out how to deal with their grief, and some are better at it than others. Those dealing better could be there for those struggling.
We knew Chris would take things hard, but Hondo also struggled. He’s done this job for so long, but he’s never made a call that got one of his team members killed. That’s now something he needs to deal with, and it leads to him questioning his actions. At the same time, Chris had to face her grief, moving past denial and onto other stages of grief.
SWAT sends messages about family and support
After the events at the house, the entire team was separated. Chris needed to speak to someone, though, and so she made a call to Luca. Later in the episode, she would call him again. Luca answered, despite the time difference. He was always going to be there for his team members.
They are all family. They are all there for each other.
That message was seen between other characters. As Tan realized that he was living in denial, Street had some wise words for him. As Hondo second-guessed his actions on the day of the raid, Deacon was there to run through it with him.
Most importantly, when the politicians wanted a scapegoat for the incident and Hicks offered himself up, Hondo refused to let it happen. What happened was bad, but it is a risk they always take. As he said, throw them into raids enough and that 1% chance of something going wrong would come up. And so, he made it clear if Hicks went, so would he.
The team is broken right now, lost with everything that’s happened. Deacon is the last we focus on after a powerful episode of SWAT. While Annie wants him to retire out of fear of what just happened, Deacon knows he can’t do that. His work family needs him, and he’s not going to leave them while they’re down.
Family has the back of others.
Once again, SWAT has done an emotional episode well. When it comes to heavy topics, you can rely on the SWAT writers to get it just right.
