Kristen Gaines opened up about her past to her ex-husband on FBI: Most Wanted. Where did those scars come from, and why didn’t she share sooner?

We got to know a little more about the new team member, Kristen Gaines, during the latest episode of FBI: Most Wanted. The episode started by showing us scars on her back, and it ended with the story of how she got them.

It turned out that her ex-husband knew about the scars, but he didn’t get to know how she got them. She told him that they were from a car accident, but that wasn’t the truth. It was nowhere near the truth.

Gaines didn’t just explain the real reason behind the scars. She also shared why she never told him in the first place, and it was a poignant reason that many trauma survivors will likely understand.

Where the scars came from on FBI: Most Wanted

Gaines explained that when she was undercover, the mission went wrong. Someone found out about her true identity and they tortured her for information. This group of criminals wanted the details of the whole team involved in Gaines’s mission undercover.

She was held for days before someone found her. And she was extremely close to talking after everything that she endured. It was just a matter of luck that she was found when she was.

Why didn’t Gaines open up to her ex-husband earlier?

One thing her ex couldn’t understand was why she didn’t tell him in the first place. Why would she lie about it and hold that trauma close to her? This is where many trauma survivors will just get it.

Gaines shared that home was supposed to be a safe place. It was supposed to be the place to go to escape the world outside. If you notice with most characters, they don’t seem to want to talk to their partners about things that have happened on cases. This isn’t to protect the ones they love, but to protect themselves.

By bringing up the case, Gaines would have brought her work home from her. Her ex-husband would have always seen the real reason behind the scars; he would have known about the trauma. It would have lived between them, and she didn’t want that. She wanted home to be her safe space.

Of course, it didn’t turn out to be. The two have separated and her ex-husband has moved on with someone else. However, that doesn’t take away from Gaines’s right to share the truth with who she chooses—to tell her story when she is ready and willing. Nobody else has the right to her story.
