9. Grantchester

Years it ran: 2014 to present

Network it aired on: It airs on ITV in the UK. In the U.S., you can watch the show on PBS Masterpiece.

What it’s about: Set in the 1950s, Grantchester seems very much like Father Brown at first. Rather than following a Catholic priest, this one follows an Anglican vicar who solves crimes. Sidney Chamgers, and later his successor Will Davenport, works with Detective Inspector Geordie Keating to solve the crimes in the village.

There are various subplots throughout the series. However, the main focus is on getting to the bottom of the crimes to bring justice.

Why you need to watch it: Just like Father Brown, tis is one of those period crime dramas with a bit of a twist. It brings us a story of a member of faith looking to find justice, not just for the families but also for the individuals who committed the crimes.

We also get a look at the UK after the Second World War. Some of the subplots touch on things that were once illegal, including abortion and homosexuality.
