5. Foyle’s War

Years it ran: 2002 to 2015

Network it aired on: The series aired on ITV in the UK. While it originally aired on PBS, it is now available to stream on Acorn TV and sometimes appears on Netflix.

What it’s about: Foyle’s War is initially set during the Second World War, but then it moves past that time period. We follow Detective Chief Superintendent Christopher Foyle, a widower who is focused on catching criminals. He is frequently underestimated by his foes, which helps him solve crimes

We get a great look at the UK during the wartime. Then we follow up with just after the time period, which was a hard time for the Brits. It meant the levels of crime increased.

Why you need to watch it: If you love Midsomer Murders, you’ll certainly love Foyle’s War. It was created by one of the Midsomer Murders screenwriters. It’s just one of the reasons to watch it.

Another is the flawed lead character. We get a detective who has his demons for some understandable reasons, but he’s trying not to let those demons affect his work.
