Is a new episode of East New York on tonight? (February 12, 2023)

“Pilot” – Amanda Warren stars as Deputy Inspector Regina Haywood, the newly promoted boss of the 74th Precinct in East New York – a working-class neighborhood on the edge of Brooklyn in the midst of social upheaval and the early seeds of gentrification. With family ties to the area, Haywood is determined to deploy creative methods to protect her beloved community with the help of her officers and detectives. But first, she has the daunting task of getting them on board, as some are skeptical of her promotion, and others resist the changes she is desperate to make. Her team includes her mentor, shrewd veteran two-star Chief John Suarez; Marvin Sandeford, a highly respected training officer and expert on the neighborhood; Tommy Killian, a detective with some old-school approaches to policing; Capt. Stan Yenko, Haywood’s gregarious and efficient right hand; Crystal Morales, an intuitive detective who can’t be intimidated; Andre Bentley, a trainee from an upper middle-class background; and ambitious patrol officer Brandy Quinlan, the sole volunteer to live in a local housing project as part of Haywood’s plan to bridge the gap between police and community. Regina Haywood has a vision: she and the squad of the 74th Precinct will not only serve their community – they’ll also become part of it, on the series premiere of EAST NEW YORK, Sunday, Oct. 2 (9:30-10:30 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network and available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+*, before moving to its regular 9:00-10:00 PM time slot Oct. 9. Series also stars Jimmy Smits, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Kevin Rankin, Richard Kind, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Olivia Luccardi and Lavel Schley.Pictured (L-R): Amanda Warren as Regina Haywood and Richard Kind as Captain Stan Yenko. We haven’t had a new episode of East New York for a few weeks now. What’s going on with the schedule? Will a new episode air tonight, Sunday, Feb. 12?

This time of year is one of the worst for Sunday dramas. Sporting fixtures and award shows often preempt the episodes. In fact, CBS made it clear back in December that while the Sunday shows would return for a couple of weeks in January, there would then be another long-ish break.

East New York is one of the shows that’s been on a hiatus since the middle of January. Will we get to watch a new episode tonight? There is some bad news. We don’t have a new episode, nor do we have a rerun. We have a night of The Equalizer reruns instead.

Why is East New York not on tonight?

What’s with the delay? Well, there is a major sporting event happening tonight. FOX has the Super Bowl on, and there is no way that CBS would consider putting a new episode of a scripted drama up against that. The Super Bowl is the biggest sporting event of the year and it would be deadly for a show to air a new episode against it.

The good news is we don’t have to wait much longer for the cop drama to return. East New York is back with a new episode on Sunday, Feb. 19. We’ll also see The Equalizer return from its long winter break before it and NCIS: Los Angeles is back with new episodes in the hour afterward.

This is a show that’s still on the bubble. The show’s ratings have been middle of the road, which isn’t that bad for a Sunday night drama. We’ll have to see how the show performs once The Equalizer is a lead-in and once sporting fixtures stop preempting episodes.
