Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for the Walker Independence Season 1 finale.

Walker Independence wrapped up its first season with a seeming victory for the good guys. But a twist at the end hints at danger to come in a possible Season 2.

The season finale finally had the big showdown as Abby and her allies tried to take down corrupt sheriff Tom. In a shootout, Tom was captured, revealing he’d known all along who Abby really was. He claimed to truly care for her, but Abby decided to let him go to jail for his crimes.

The gang saw Tom off into a prison wagon, thinking that was it. But Kate saw a worker painting a message offering $10,000 to anyone who freed Tom. It was from a telegram sent by Tom’s family and the likelihood they’d sent the same message to every town in the territory. They tried to catch the wagon, but it was too late.

What they didn’t know was that Tom had realized the guard inside his wagon had the same circle tattoo he’d seen on an attacker in an earlier episode. That guard then knocked Tom out. At the end of the episode, Tom was shown by a campfire when a mysterious man came up to tell him he had another chance. Tom looked up to say, “Good to see you again, Dad.”

What does Tom’s escape mean for Season 2?

Thus, Tom is on the loose and now with his father. Speaking to TVLine, showrunner Kevin Fahey shared that “Playing into that new mystery in a Season 2 would be the new onion [to] peel layer upon layer away.” He won’t share just who this mysterious group is but that they have a plan for Tom.

Fahey also touched on Tom’s father and the idea that the figure fans assumed was the villain of the show might be terrified by a more ruthless monster.

"“If we’re lucky enough to explore more stories in this world, it would definitely be about that father-son dynamic, in the wake of everything that Tom did and everything that happened. And how does Aunt Teresa fall in that mix? How do you take a character, who is more or less fearless in Tom Davidson, and kind of get to a point where he was cornered by everybody else on the call sheet? You finally see him sweating a little bit. But he made it this far, and how can you pull it off in just one scene where he’s terrified of what comes next, just by a shadow alone, the presence of a father figure? That was an interesting way to end the season: What is a villain now scared of, and opening it up to a bigger threat and a bigger mystery.”"

While it’s unsure if Walker Independence will get a second season, Tom’s new direction will be something to play with and makes fans hopeful for another year to explore it.
