Is East New York canceled? (Is East New York renewed for Season 2?)

“Pilot” – Amanda Warren stars as Deputy Inspector Regina Haywood, the newly promoted boss of the 74th Precinct in East New York – a working-class neighborhood on the edge of Brooklyn in the midst of social upheaval and the early seeds of gentrification. With family ties to the area, Haywood is determined to deploy creative methods to protect her beloved community with the help of her officers and detectives. But first, she has the daunting task of getting them on board, as some are skeptical of her promotion, and others resist the changes she is desperate to make. Her team includes her mentor, shrewd veteran two-star Chief John Suarez; Marvin Sandeford, a highly respected training officer and expert on the neighborhood; Tommy Killian, a detective with some old-school approaches to policing; Capt. Stan Yenko, Haywood’s gregarious and efficient right hand; Crystal Morales, an intuitive detective who can’t be intimidated; Andre Bentley, a trainee from an upper middle-class background; and ambitious patrol officer Brandy Quinlan, the sole volunteer to live in a local housing project as part of Haywood’s plan to bridge the gap between police and community. Regina Haywood has a vision: she and the squad of the 74th Precinct will not only serve their community – they’ll also become part of it, on the series premiere of EAST NEW YORK, Sunday, Oct. 2 (9:30-10:30 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network and available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+*, before moving to its regular 9:00-10:00 PM time slot Oct. 9. Series also stars Jimmy Smits, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Kevin Rankin, Richard Kind, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Olivia Luccardi and Lavel Schley. Photo: Peter Kramer/CBS ©2022 CBS Broadcasting, Inc. When CBS renewed a bulk of its shows, East New York was missing off the list. What does this mean for the freshman series? Is it canceled?

There is no doubt that when CBS bulk renews shows, we worry about those that didn’t make the cut. East New York was one of the three main crime dramas missing from the list of renewed shows, and it does have us concerned.

The freshman drama takes up Sunday nights, airing after The Equalizer. For a while, it did kick off Sunday nights as the Queen Latifah series took a longer winter break than other Sunday shows. Did this affect the renewal chances?

Is East New York Season 2 going to happen?

As of right now, no news is good news. CBS may not have renewed the show, but it also hasn’t canceled the show. Deadline shares that this is one of those standard bubble show cases.

The live ratings have been pretty steady, even without The Equalizer acting as a lead-in. However, when it comes to the overall CBS performance, it’s been a median series. It sits in 11th out of 18 scripted shows when looking at the average demo. It’s in 10th when it comes to the total audience.

When you consider this placement is before Tuesday night’s FBI: Most Wanted, which has already secured a renewal, that’s not too bad. However, it is low for a freshman series, and this could put it in the firing line. Fire Country and So Help Me Todd were two freshman shows that quickly landed renewals, and we know now all new shows get a second season.

We’re not going to get answers until May at this point. However, we may want to be ready for East New York to be canceled to make way for another new series on the network.
