NBC has made a decision on Law & Order, so is the iconic procedural drama going for a 23rd season?

Debuting in 1990, Law & Order set the bar for scores of procedural shows to follow. The idea of the first half of an episode focusing on the cops investigating a murder and the second half showing the prosecution of the crime has become a mainstay not just on NBC but reruns on several networks.

The show was shockingly canceled at the end of its 20th season in 2010 as NBC developed the short-lived LA spin-off. But in 2021, it was revived for Season 21, continuing as if no break at all had occurred.

The show has kept strong this year with the addition of Mehcad Brooks as new detective Jalen Shaw and still working the classic “ripped from the headlines” storylines. This has built in hopes it might get yet another year to continue its success on NBC.

Is Law & Order canceled or renewed?

As part of a big announcement, NBC confirmed that Law & Order will be back for Season 23. It’s joined by Special Victims Unit, Organized Crime, and all three One Chicago shows.

With the final episodes of Season 22 to air starting April 27, Law & Order is ready to deliver more of its unique plotlines and fire up fans for the season finales in May.

When does Law & Order Season 23 premiere?

Obviously, NBC isn’t making announcements yet on their fall 2023 schedule but it’s expected that Law & Order will return in September and NBC will continue to have Thursdays be dominated by the franchise.

For now, NBC is happy to see the series continue as it plans to continue its record run on network television that began this entire franchise.

Law & Order Season 22 returns on Thursday, April 27 at 8/7c on NBC and streams on Peacock.
