A decision has been made on Law & Order: SVU. Will this series continue its record-breaking run on NBC?
When it debuted in 1999, few could imagine Law & Order: SVU would shatter the record for the most seasons and episodes of any prime-time television drama. Currently sitting on 534 episodes, the series seems set to continue its stunning run. That includes Mariska Hargitay becoming the actor with the longest consecutive run on the same prime-time series, with Ice-T close behind her.
The show has continued to balance its character drama with the “ripped from the headlines” storylines. Season 24 has been notable for the departure of Kelli Giddish as Detective Amanda Rollins and Molly Burnett joining as new SVU cop Grace Muncy.
The series has been adding new characters in Brooklyn SVU cops Tonie Churlish (Jasmine Batchelor) and Terry Bruno (Kevin Kane), although it’s uncertain if they will become regulars. It still adds more spark to the series, as fans have been hoping to see it continue.
Is Law & Order: SVU Season 25 happening?
As part of a wider renewal of the various Dick Wolf series on NBC, it was confirmed that Law & Order: SVU will return for a record 25th season. It’s expected for the current cast to return, which means Hargitay will continue her run as Olivia Benson for 25 years, a television record.
This makes Law & Order: SVU a true historic television show that should hit its 550th episode next year, an impressive achievement.
When will Law & Order: SVU return?
While NBC has announced their 2023 fall schedule, it’s likely the Law & Order shows will return as usual in September. It’s also probable they’ll keep to Thursday nights, as NBC won’t want to shake things up by moving the shows around.
Law & Order: SVU is on a break until April 27 but will likely run through new episodes until the Season 24 finale. Fans can now be certain another year of wild storylines is coming for the series.
