CBS is making some final decisions about its current slate of shows. East New York is on the list, but is it good or bad news?

It’s the time of year for final decisions to be made for the current slate of TV. CBS didn’t have many shows on the bubble. SWAT was arguably the biggest, which went from being canceled to renewed within days.

This quickly led to a final decision to be made about East New York, the freshman cop drama that follows Amanda Warren as Regina Haywood, the newly promoted deputy inspector of the East New York district of Brooklyn. The people of the area didn’t have faith or trust in the cops, but Regina made it clear that had to change. So, she brought in that change with creative methods that a lot of people were understandable against.

Is East New York canceled or renewed for Season 2?

The decision about East New York came in just minutes after CBS announced that SWAT would be renewed for a 13-episode final season after all. It wasn’t good news.

CBS has decided to cancel the series. Deadline reports that the two shows were fighting for the same timeslot in the 2023-2024 season, so once the decision to un-cancel SWAT came in, it was clear that there wasn’t room for the Amanda Warren-led series.

Budget and negotiations with Warner Bros. issues were also a problem. CBS wanted to extend the streaming deal beyond just the current season of the show, but it sounds like Warner Bros. didn’t want that. Fans who get Paramount+ to watch a show want to be able to watch more than the current season, so it makes sense why CBS would want to extend that.

The live ratings were similar between SWAT and East New York. This could have played some part, too. A one-season show having low ratings similar to a six-season series was always going to be a concern. The ratings tend to dip each year, so lowish ratings for a one-season show would always be a concern.

The Season 2 finale that airs on Sunday, May 14 will now be the series finale.

East New York is currently available to stream on Paramount+.
