It’s a good week of news for fans of CBS’s SWAT. Not only did the drama escape cancellation with a cancellation reversal but now the early seasons will be available to stream on Netflix! When does the hit cop drama premiere on the streamer?

Based on the 1970s series, SWAT follows the LAPD’s Special Weapons and Tactics team, a unit deployed for the most high-risk assignments. In the pilot, when their leader shoots a black youth, a decision is made for Sgt Dan “Hondo” Harrison (Shemar Moore) to take over as team leader.

The series co-stars Kenny Johnson, Alex Russell, David Lim, Jay Harrington, and Patrick St. Esprit. Lina Esco had starred for the first five seasons before leaving and was replaced by Anna Enger Ritch. Meanwhile, after recurring for several seasons as Hondo’s love interest, Rochelle Aytes was promoted to the main cast in Season 6.

The show had been doing well in the ratings and thus a shock when CBS announced it was being canceled before the Season 6 finale aired. The backlash against this led to CBS reversing course and renewing SWAT for a 13-episode seventh and final season.

Now, fans will be able to enjoy the series on a new streaming home on Netflix.

How and when is SWAT coming to Netflix?

Like all CBS series, SWAT was already available to stream on Paramount+, while the first three seasons can also be streamed on Hulu. Now, as part of a wider negotiation deal with Sony Pictures TV (which produces the show), Netflix customers can begin streaming the first five seasons of SWAT beginning the morning of Wednesday, May 17.

The first five seasons will be available to stream at 3 a.m. ET/12 a.m. PT on Wednesday morning.

As it happens, these negotiations had originally been a factor in CBS canceling SWAT due to rights issues. A significant factor was that SWAT is created by Shawn Murphy, whose The Night Agent series has been one of Netflix’s biggest recent hits. This played a part in Netflix agreeing to a deal to allow the series to air on the streamer.

So with this news, Netflix customers will be able to see the thrills and excitement of SWAT’s first seasons and prepare for the last two to come.
