NCIS: Hawaii left a few big questions for Season 3, but one of the biggest is if the team will go hunting for Jane’s former mentor, Maggie. Could that be a focus for Season 3?

Caution: This article has SPOILERS for the NCIS: Hawaii Season 2 finale

One of the biggest turns of NCIS: Hawaii’s first season was Jane Tennant turning to aid from her former mentor, Maggie Shaw. The pair had worked together in the CIA, with Maggie, a true friend to Jane, although she had retired to be a local professor.

While hunting a Chinese agent named Boa, Jane came to the shocking realization that Maggie was aiding him and a double agent. It turned out Bao was Maggie’s son, and, to help him out, she was feeding him information. Maggie agreed to be imprisoned as long as her son was safe, with Jane heartbroken at her betrayal.

In the two-part Season 2 finale, Jane had to go to an imprisoned Maggie when a former contact of theirs was murdered. This was connected to Creel, a former spy Jane and Maggie had tried to help years before but turned out to be playing them. Creel was seemingly killed in an explosion Maggie arranged.

Instead, Creel survived and was out for revenge. Unaware Maggie was imprisoned, he tried to get Jane to give her up. Eventually, Jane was forced to let Maggie out of jail as bait to lure Creel out.

Is Maggie truly gone in NCIS: Hawaii?

Maggie seemed to be giving the team the slip, but it turned out to be part of her and Jane’s plan. Maggie met Creel in secret with Jane in the trunk. They took out his guys with Jane ready to arrest Creel, only for Maggie to shoot him dead. She and Jane stared at each other before Maggie ran off.

The episode ended with the team together and Jane recovering from it all. It’s unclear whether she and the team will go after Maggie. Jane pointed out that as a veteran spy, Maggie would easily be able to evade detection and make it hard to locate her. She also clearly felt grateful to Maggie for saving her life, even if she still wanted justice.

It does seem likely Maggie will pop up again with Jane once more, wrestling with whether or not their past friendship makes up for this betrayal. For now, the NCIS team may have bigger cases to handle, but Jane will be ready for when she and Maggie cross paths again.
