There are some great crime dramas on streaming networks, and Perry Mason is one of them. Will there be a third season of the series?

Matthew Rhys took on the role of Perry Mason in the prequel spin-off to the OG series from the ’70s. The second season came to an end earlier this year, and now eyes are on whether we’ll get another part of the story.

HBO has made a decision about the period drama. Sadly, it’s not good news.

Perry Mason canceled after two seasons

HBO has opted not to move forward with a third season of the series. To be honest, this was a show that wasn’t even expected to get a second season. It was initially looked at to be a limited series and then the show was renewed for Season 2.

It all comes down to cost, based on Deadline‘s report. The show costs a lot to produce, especially with it being a period drama. It would need to pull in the ratings to keep going, and it doesn’t sound like this show managed that. HBO may not have helped with this as there wasn’t a lot of promotion around the second season of the series. This is becoming a bit of a problem for a lot of premium cable networks and streaming platforms what with the wait for seasons due to the pandemic shutdown.

The series was produced by Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey’s Team Downey. The production company will continue working with HBO on new projects, but it won’t be this one.

The Season 2 finale will now work as a series finale. It doesn’t sound like there is work on getting the series saved by another platform.

Perry Mason is available to stream on HBO and Max.
