Alaska Daily is one of those shows that we need more of on our screens. So, why did ABC choose to cancel the series after just one season?
There are certain shows that we need more of. Those that focus on the murdered and missing Indigenous women and girls are on that list. So it was mighty disappointing when ABC chose to cancel Alaska Daily.
This was a series that brought to light the injustice against Indigenous women and girls. Their murders are left unsolved. Missing people are just left missing. And then there’s systemic racism against them when it comes to people being arrested for crimes they didn’t commit. This series focused on all of that, as Eileen and Roz investigated the murder of one Indigenous woman only to see why there was such a problem.
Why ABC canceled Alaska Daily
It looks like the series became a victim of not enough linear ratings during the season. Thursdays after Grey’s Anatomy are difficult. To be honest, the 10 p.m. ET/PT timeslot is a difficult one for ABC, CBS, and NBC most nights. It’s always disappointing to see a new show that is needed get put on at that time.
It turns out the cost of the show was high. This meant strong ratings were necessary. With that in mind, it begs the question why ABC would put the show on in the timeslot it did.
This was a disappointing move by all. Not just for those who worked on the show, but for those who knew that this type of series was necessary to bring to light a very real problem in North America.
Alaska Daily is available to stream on Hulu.
