It’s a long summer, and we’ll be going into the fall with minimal scripted dramas. What’s happening with the shows? Is The Rookie canceled?
If you thought the pandemic year was bad, you’re going to hate the strike year. While reality shows and game shows can still film, the writers and actors strikes are putting all scripted shows in the United States on hold.
That includes the Nathan Fillion-led drama The Rookie. This is a show that did land a renewal from ABC earlier on in 2023, but now we’re worried. Is it possible that we’ll start to see renewed dramas canceled due to the wait and the costs? Is The Rookie Season 6 going to happen?
The Rookie Season 6 hasn’t been canceled
As of writing this, The Rookie Season 6 is still happening. ABC confirmed back in May that it was planning for a long strike. It opted to set a fall that was made up of reality shows and game shows. All scripted comedies and dramas are being held until January 2024 at the earliest.
With ABC planning ahead for the strike, we don’t see cancellations coming in. At least, not for the shows that have already been confirmed. Once the strike action comes to an end, writers will be able to get in their rooms and production will be able to start shortly after. There isn’t the uncertainty that the pandemic brought for a lot of TV shows, leading to “unrenewals.”
There are a couple of shows that we’re concerned about, though. One of them is The Rookie: Feds, which failed to secure a renewal ahead of the May Upfronts. It is still in limbo to this date, which isn’t a good sign for the show. Kennedy McMann’s new series The Good Lawyer is also still in limbo, but that is a pilot and a little less concerning than The Rookie: Feds when it comes to no news at the moment. ABC hasn’t seemed to announce a lot of pilots, which could help secure The Good Doctor spin-off a place in the midseason schedule.
The Rookie is available to stream on Hulu.
