The first season of The Irrational has introduced us to Mercer’s traumatic past and his fight to uncover the truth. He knows that behavior is rationally irrational, and he works to understand people to figure out what they’ll do next or what they’ll need to do in order to feel vindicated.
During the second episode, Alec managed to unlock a memory. He used the power of scent to be able to do it, which is a very real way to unlock memories. You’d be amazed by what comes up when it comes to some scents and where we can be taken back to. What will he be able to do with that information?

The Irrational spoilers: 1×03 promo
The promo for the episode gives us a look at what Alec is going to do to get to the bottom of the case that he’s pulled into. The case involves a pilot who may have been suicidal. Of course, the cops look into the pilot’s live with an agenda, but Alec won’t do that.
He wants to understand the pilot better. This will tell him if the pilot did it, or if there is someone else to look at. He has no gain in doing this except to continue to prove that he is an expert in this stuff, so we have no reason to doubt his logic to get to the truth.

The Irrational spoilers: 1×03 synopsis
What is the episode about? Well, the case will see a passenger plane crash land in the Potomac River. The pilot is immediately made the suspect for this. After all, the passenger was the one landing the plane. If he wanted to kill himself, would he kill innocent people at the same time?
Alec needs to look into the personal life of the pilot to get to the truth. What happened while the plane was in the air?
