Bosch: Legacy opened Season 2 with a special tribute to the late Lance Reddick and Annie Wersching. Just what did Reddick mean to Bosch to earn that honor?
When Bosch premiered, Lance Reddick was a top face as Deputy Chief Irwin Irving. In the original novels, he and the titular character were often at odds, but Irving instead was a good ally on the show. He had his ups and downs in command but did his best to back up Bosch, even if he often reprimanded him as well.
Irving was dealt a huge blow when his policeman son was killed in a case involving dirty cops. Knowing the higher-ups may want to sweep the whole thing under the rug, Irving fought against them. Indeed, he sabotaged a mayoral candidate who promised a big promotion but would have ignored the case.
Irving did end up being promoted to chief of police and was forced to deal with the politics of the job a lot. His last appearance was in the final scene of the original series, as Irving had to let a criminal go due to an FBI deal with the man shot dead by someone else. Bosch quit the force on the spot, giving Irving his gun and badge.
What happened to Lance Reddick after Bosch?
Lance Reddick had already been a veteran actor before Bosch with major roles on the acclaimed HBO drama The Wire and the Fox sci-fi series Fringe. He starred in numerous other TV shows like Resident Evil and scores of movies, most prominently the John Wick films.
Reddick unexpectedly died on March 17, 2023, at the age of 60. His final role will be playing Zeus in Disney+’s upcoming Percy Jackson and the Olympians series.
Supposedly, Legacy producers had hoped to bring back Irving as in the books, he ends up becoming a councilman. Sadly, this will never happen, as the tribute in the episode shows what a key figure Reddick was for the show’s success.
