A Murder at the End of the World looks like a great new murder mystery thriller. But just where was this moody FX/Hulu series filmed?
TV has been doing a great job with new takes on the classic whodunit, such as Only Murders in the Building. A Murder at the End of the World uses that with one of the oldest and best motifs in the murder mystery genre: A remote mansion that’s soon home to murder.
In this case, an eccentric millionaire (Clive Owen) invites a pack of guests to his mansion in Iceland. When a guest turns up dead, an amateur detective (Emma Corrin) has to work out what happened before more murders occur.
The trailers hint that the series uses its remote locale with heavy snow, and the fact the guests are cut off from civilization only adds to the danger. But was it actually filmed in its supposed location?
A Murder at the End of the World filming locations
According to Ready, Steady, Cut, some segments in the show were indeed filmed in Iceland to capture the stark, barren landscapes and the isolation for the guests. However, it appears not all of the show was filmed there, likely due to the logistics of filming in harsh conditions.
A lot of filming was done in Kearny, New Jersey, home to shows like The Sopranos. It’s uncertain how that fits into the storyline, as perhaps it’s used as the village seen in the show. Also, a few days of filming were done in Readington Farm, New Jersey.
Interesting were scenes filmed in Utah, whose sunny skies are a far cry from Iceland. Perhaps these are meant for flashbacks taking place before the main storyline.
So A Murder at the End of the World did use Iceland a bit but other locales to make it a mystery for viewers to figure out which scenes were filmed where.
A Murder At the End of the World premieres on Tuesday, Nov. 14 on Hulu.
