Prime Video has made a decision on Harlan Coben’s Shelter. It’s bad news for fans of the series.
Premiering in August 2023, Shelter is based on the novels by Harlan Coben, focusing on Mickey Boiltar (Jaden Michael), who moves to a small New Jersey town following the death of his father. When a classmate goes missing, Mickey joins two friends (Adrian Greensmith and Abby Corrigan) in finding her and soon unravels a complex conspiracy.
The series had some great twists and turns, including MIckey’s aunt (Constance Zimmer) romancing a neighbor’s wife and some good thrills. The finale left off on a huge cliffhanger that changed Mickey’s life and promised a bold new direction in Season 2.
However, it’s clear now that there fans will not get to see that payoff. Amazon has some bad news for fans of the series.
Harlan Coben’s Shelter will not be renewed for Season 2
Sadly for fans, Harlan Coben’s Shelter will not be coming back for Season 2. The series was canceled along with The Horror of Dolores Roach and With Love.
It’s a disappointing move, and the most likely reason is that Amazon is trying to restructure following the summer-long WGA and SAG strikes. There has been a wave of such cancellations across networks and streamers, and Amazon appears to be attempting to salvage resources that were lost due to the long strikes.
It is disappointing for Shelter, which was not only a smart show but also boasted a lead of color and some good LGBTQ storylines. It’s especially frustrating, given that amazing cliffhanger and the promise of more excitement in another year.
It seems unlikely the series can be picked up by another streamer given how the other networks and streamers are in just as rough shape for projects. It also sounds like the series didn’t have the major fanbase needed to justify the costs of another season.
Thus, Shelter will stand as a one-season wonder for Prime Video despite how good it was.
