Law & Order Season 23 is heading to our screens very soon, but there will be some cast changes. Here’s what we know about the new season so far.

The revival has only be back for two seasons and there are more cast changes coming. The good news is that it’s not Sam Waterston, who will definitely be back as DA Jack McCoy.

The show has been on hold for a while. It was caught up in the dual strikes this summer, but now those strikes are at an end. Here’s what we know about the premiere date, the new cast member, and more.

When will Law & Order Season 23 premiere on NBC?

NBC originally wanted the show back in fall 2023. That didn’t happen due to the strike action. Production has started up immediately after the SAG-AFTRA strike ended, and that’s great news for fans of the show.

We’re getting shows back in January on NBC. Law & Order Season 23 will premiere on Thursday, Jan. 18. It will kick off a night of Law & Order dramas as usual, so will air at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

Yes, episodes will be on Peacock the following day.

How many episodes are in Law & Order Season 23?

The original plan was to have 18 to 20 episodes this season. We were also going to see some characters missing here and there as a cost-cutting measure of the Dick Wolf productions on NBC. However, that could change now.

The episode count is likely to be at 13 due to when production started in late November. That will likely mean a small hiatus in the airing schedule, but it means that the costs have naturally been cut due to the episode count being reduced. This could mean we get all characters in all episodes.

Who isn’t returning and who’s new in Season 23 of Law & Order?

Jeffrey Donovan is not coming back as Detective Frank Cosgrove. The actor, who joined when the revival started up, left due to “creative differences.”

He will be replaced by Reid Scott, who is known as George Ford on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. His character hasn’t been named yet, but we know that he is taking over as the lead detective.

The remaining cast is expected to return. That means we should see:

  • Sam Waterston as DA Jack McCoy
  • Mehcad Brooks as Detective Jalen Shaw
  • Camryn Manheim as Lieutenant Kate Dixon
  • Hugh Dancy as Executive ADA Nolan Price
  • Odelya Halevi as ADA Samantha Maroun

What to expect in Law & Order Season 23

The new season is sure to follow the way previous seasons have. The episodes are cases of the week, with them being split in two to follow both the police work and the justice side of things. That’s the way this show stood out from all the other cop dramas when it first started.

The only thing that needs to be answered is where Frank is now and why he left. That could very easily be covered in a sentence at the start of the season as Scott comes in as his new character.
