It’s been a long wait, but at last, HBO’s acclaimed crime anthology True Detective is coming back for Season 4. Find out more about it here.

Premiering in 2012, True Detective quickly became a sensation for HBO. The tale of a years-spanning criminal case was highlighted by the star power of Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey and became part of the “McConaissance.” The show was a ratings hit that also won multiple Emmys.

The second season, starring Vince Vaughn and Rachel McAdams, wasn’t as well-received. A third season, starring Mahershala Ali, aired in 2019 and was better received but not as successful with viewers.

However, HBO is bringing it back with a subtitle of “Night Country.” Here’s what to know about it!

When will True Detective Season 4 premiere?

HBO confirmed the premiere date for Season 4 will be Sunday, Janu. 14, 2024, at 9/8c on HBO and be available to stream on MAX. New episodes will then drop every Sunday.

How many episodes are in True Detective Season 4?

Per Variety, the episode count is shorter here as there will be only six episodes. This means the Season 4 finale will air on HBO on Sunday, Feb. 18, 2024.

Who stars in True Detective: Night Country?

As usual, True Detective lands a big name for the lead, in this case, Jodie Foster. The two-time Academy Award winner plays Liz Danvers, an Alaska cop. Former champion boxer Kali Reis plays Evangeline Navarro, her partner. The supporting cast includes Finn Bennett, Fiona Shaw, former Doctor Who star Christopher Eccleston, and John Hawkes.

  • Jodie Foster as Liz Danvers
  • Kali Reis as Evangeline Navarro
  • Finn Bennett as Peter Prior
  • Fiona Shaw as Rose Aguineau
  • Christopher Eccleston as Ted Corsaro
  • Isabella Star LaBlanc as Leah Danvers
  • John Hawkes as Hank Prior

What is Season 4 of True Detective about?

Once more, the series looks to jump across timelines in the past and present. The main plotline for True Detective Season 4 has Foster’s cop investigating the disappearance of scientists in an Alaska research station. This brings in Reis with flashbacks showing the pair worked an odd murder case in the past that caused some tensions between them. They’ll have to overcome that to figure out this case and its connections to a greater mystery.

"“When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.”"
