5 cop shows like Blue Bloods

NYPD Blue

I doubt we’d have a series like Blue Bloods if it wasn’t for another New York cop drama from the 1990s. Yes, it’s all about NYPD Blue, which premiered in 1993 and ran for an impressive 12 seasons. This is one of those shows that helped to change broadcast TV a little, making shows a little darker and grittier.

The series continued the procedural elements that fans expected at the time, but it wasn’t just for entertainment. There were moments that had people shocked at what was allowed to be shown on TV. If only they knew what we’d get on TV now!

Criminal Minds

If you want something a little grittier than Blue Bloods, you’ll want to turn to fellow CBS procedural, Criminal Minds. The series focuses on the BAU, a team of FBI agents who specialize in the behavior of UnSubs to find the right person doing the crimes.

While darker than Blue Bloods, there is the team element. The entire BAU is very much a family, and they all felt the pain when significant others were harmed and even killed. There’s now a revival, Evolution, which is far darker than the OG series thanks to its move to Paramount+.

Six Feet Under

Okay, this one isn’t a cop show. We’re cheating with this one. However, it is perfect for fans of Blue Bloods. This is a series that is all about family, life achievements and moments, death, and simply living. It also has one of—if not the best—series finales of all time.

The series is set in a funeral home for the most part. It always opens with a death, and then we see how this family of funeral home owners help the living grieve while dealing with their own problems. There is a cop in the show, so we’ll use that as a reason to watch it if you love cop shows.

NCIS Season 21
“Ex-File”–The NCIS team (Mark Harmon, Michael Weatherly, center, and Cote de Pablo) investigates the murder of a Marine Captain who had access to highly classified information, on NCIS, Tuesday, Oct. 9 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.Photo: Cliff Lipson/CBS ©2007 CBS Broadcasting Inc. NCIS

Where would we be without another CBS procedural? Of course, we have to bring up NCIS. This long-running series is actually a spin-off of JAG, and it’s worth watching that too while you fill the void as we wait for other shows to return.

The series focuses on a team of federal agents who only investigate Naval crimes. Like with Criminal Minds, the team is more of a family than most of the individual family members are. We go through various moments in their lives, including relationships, having children, and death of loved ones.

The Shield

We round out this list with another show that has come to an end. The Shield is a must-watch for those who want to see groundbreaking TV. Up to this point, shows gave us cops who were the good guys at all times. They could make mistakes, but they always did the wrong thing for the right reasons. That wasn’t the case with The Shield.

This team opted for some very questionable methods to get information from suspects. It brought a side to the life of cops that everyone wanted to ignore but couldn’t any longer. Even the pilot opens with a shocking moment that left fans wondering just how dark this show could get. At the heart of it, though, the cops just wanted to keep the bad guys off the streets.
