Some canceled crime dramas definitely hurt more than others in 2023

There were some big decisions from networks when it came to canceled crime dramas in 2023. Some of them we’re still salty about.

The 2022–2023 season on broadcast saw a lot of big cancellations. Not all of them were crime dramas, but it was still hard seeing so many shows come to an end. It wasn’t just the broadcast networks, though.

The streamers have also canceled a lot of great shows. Some are casualties of the strike action over the summer, but others were decisions made earlier this year for various reasons.

There are always some cancellations that sting the most. These are the ones we’re still salty about.

ABC and CBS canceled crime dramas we’ll miss

Big Sky

After three seasons, Big Sky is coming to an end. The series was one of those that certainly made us to expect the unexpected. In the pilot episode, Ryan Phillippe’s character was killed off, leaving us all wondering what could and would happen next!

Each season saw Cassie and Jenny work on new cases, offering an anthology style with the character development focused on the leads. The third season even saw Reba McEntire step into the role of an intriguing character and promoted Jensen Ackles to series regular to expand on his character.

Sadly, nothing was enough to pull up the linear ratings, and ABC canceled the show. We would love to see more of this show that brought some darker storylines and plenty of twists that had us reeling.

Alaska Daily

There are some shows that are needed for the awareness they bring. Alaska Daily was one of those shows. It focused on the problem of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls across North America. While the focus in the show is in Alaska, this is a huge problem in real life across the United States, Canada, and beyond.

Police don’t do enough to find Indigenous people. There is always a scapegoat or the case just goes cold. Hilary Swank’s character Eileen did a great job of showing the injustice and the anger as the truth comes to light.

Sadly, the show didn’t get the audience ABC needed to keep it on the air. It’s a shame because more stories like this need to be told.

NCIS: Los Angeles

Of course, all good things eventually have to come to an end. We just weren’t ready for NCIS: Los Angeles to be one of them. Not in the way the ending came. There was just enough time to craft an ending, but we wanted more.

What hurt the most was that this cancellation came straight off the back of a successful three-way crossover even with NCIS and NCIS: Hawaii. This could have offered more storylines had the three shows all remained on the air at the same time.

At least we’ll see Sam Hana show up in the spin-off.
