11 crime dramas canceled in 2023 we’re still salty about
The CW and Freeform canceled crime dramas
The CW made some disappointing decisions in May 2022 and then followed those decisions throughout the 2022–2023 schedule. This was all linked to the Nexstar takeover. Freeform then followed suit by canceling some great crime shows.
Kung Fu
Let’s just start with the gender-flipped crime drama that we didn’t realize we needed. Kung Fu brought us a story steeped in Chinese culture and mythology. It had some great supernatural elements to the story, but still kept things grounded in reality. There was a focus on expectations for Chinese girls and women, even in an American society, something that is often overlooked in TV.
This show opted to right a wrong of the OG series. The cast was primarily made up of Asian-American actors—with only the white characters played by white actors. Then there was the fact that a lot of the characters were females that we could really root behind.
We need more diverse shows, not less!
Walker Independence
The CW also opted to cancel the Walker prequel spin-off, Walker Independence. This series took us back to the Wild West, to find out how Abigail Walker got her start in Independence, Texas. There were some excellent connections to the main series and some fun cameos.
One of the reasons we’re salty about this is the fact that the casting was inclusive and diverse. There were some promising storylines and a chance to raise awareness about parts of history that not everyone wants to remember—history isn’t there to be liked, people!
Oh, and we ended up with a major cliffhanger. Can we get some answers, please?
Cruel Summer
Freeform canceled its final two original scripted shows, with Cruel Summer being one of them. Unlike a lot of other cancellations, this one didn’t really have too many problems with leaving fans on the edge. After all, each season is a self-contained storyline as an anthology series.
It’s just a shame that we lost another great show aimed at 20-somethings. There aren’t actually that many when you look around, and Freeform (like The CW) was once a hub for that. It’s just a sign that 20-somethings have more of a reason to switch from cable to streaming.
