Canceled crime shows on streaming

Streaming networks don’t get a pass! They were also guilty of canceling some great crime dramas throughout 2023. One of the first was an Amazon series, and then Amazon ended with some disappointing decisions.

Three Pines

We start with one of the first cancellations. Three Pines aired on Prime Video in December 2022, but it wasn’t canceled until March 2023. The series, based on Louise Penny’s series of books, brought to life a fun and intriguing detective. Chief Inspector Armand Gamache worked on multiple mysteries throughout the first season.

In fact, the first season solves a case every two episodes. It was great knowing that we wouldn’t be left with some major cliffhanger at the end, and we saw how a small town would look out for itself but also how bad it is for ostracizing people.

The cancellation was somewhat surprising. The series was a hit with viewers on the streaming network, so we’re salty that we won’t get to see more.

Shelter

Amazon ended the year with some awful decisions. It opted to cancel three shows with a diverse cast, and one of them was Harlan Coben’s Shelter. This series is based on the YA book series, but it made some substantial changes to characters, including bringing us Mickey’s aunt instead of uncle into the story.

We got a great murder mystery to solve, and some interesting characters to follow. Sadly, this series didn’t get the viewership that it deserved. We’ll blame the lack of promotion due to the strike action for this.

Perry Mason

Okay, Perry Mason was originally set to be a limited series. Getting a second season was great in its own right, but it made it very clear that this was a show that we needed more of. It brought us into the heart of the 1930s, giving us a chance to feel what people were going through then and how it affected lives.

There’s still a huge love for Perry Mason as a character. He’s one of those we love to see work and figure out the clues. Matthew Rhys was the perfect casting choice, bringing plenty of mannerisms from the original series but making the character his own.

Fortunately, a lot of the storylines were wrapped up by the end of the second season. However, we’re here for HBO to change its mind.

One of Us Is Lying

One of the early cancellations of 2023 was the YA series One of Us Is Lying. Yes, Peacock, we’re looking at you for this decision. It was heartbreaking, especially with the way that the second season ended. Who killed Fiona while in prison? And why was it so similar to Simon’s death in the first season?

This is a show that went beyond the first book, and it did it in a way that worked for the characters. The storylines were still a huge draw and had plenty of twists and turns without us just ready to see who taunted the group and why.

Let’s also not overlook how all the relationships changed by the end of the second season. There was so much to unpack, and the series deserved more time.
