The Spencer Sisters finale explained: What happened in the final case?

The Spencer Sisters wrapped up its first season on The CW this week. But what final crime did the Spencers need to solve?

“The Runaways Regret” began with the Spencers still on the outs, with Darby shacking up with boyfriend Des and refusing to talk to Victoria, thinking Victoria was lying about Darby’s father trying to stop her from having a writing career.

Victoria and Billy’s quiet morning was interrupted by men showing up to kidnap Billy, calling him James and wanting “The Alchemist.” Victoria was able to reach Darby as Alistar shared that Billy/James was suspected of being involved with a murder in London.

“The Alchemist” was a near-legendary priceless painting so sought after that it was almost considered a myth. It seems James was an art authenticator in London who confirmed for a gang they had the painting, only for it to end in murder. He went on the run, taking with him both the painting and a key for its location.

Various turns had the Spencers finding the painting and a video proving Billy/James had seen criminal Vasily shoot the man trying to sell the painting to him after James made sure it was real. Vasily knew James had the actual painting and wanted it back.

Naturally, Darby figured the cops should know about this, only for Victoria to try to meet James alone. Darby followed, leaving a message to Lucas about how much he meant to her. That came just after Lindsay told Lucas she was being given a big legal case and would have to postpone the wedding.

Do the Spencers save Billy in The Spencer Sisters Season 1 finale?

Lucas shared the message with Zane as both realized Darby was going to risk her life. Victoria was trying to trade the Alchemist for Billy only to realize Vasily was going to kill them both anyway. Luckily, Darby showed up, pulling off a great bluff of pretending to be an Interpol agent to distract the gang long enough for the police to show up and arrest them.

Zane was a bit annoyed that boss Harris (who had dismissed the entire case) was going to be recognized for his “heroics” in solving it. Alistar was tempted to admit he had feelings for Victoria but kept quiet. Victoria herself bid goodbye to Billy/James, who was being arrested for the theft. He insisted all his feelings for Victoria were real.

Just as she had left a message for Des on how great they were, Darby was thrown when Lucas showed up and kissed her. He quickly apologized, but it was clear they still had feelings for each other.

The final scene had Darby telling Victoria to go ahead with her book tour and apologizing for not believing the talk of her father not being that great a guy. She then sat down to finally start reading her mother’s books.

So The Spencer Sisters ends with the pair back on the same page at last, yet a few dangling hooks on their relationships that make it hopeful a Season 2 is coming.
