We knew 911: Lone Star season 5, episode 11 would bring an end of the world event. Just would it actually end the world?
Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for 911: Lone Star season 5, episode 11.
The penultimate episode was always going to be a big one, but I think the opening made it clear that the asteroid wouldn’t end the state. The opening disaster seemed to be in a nuclear plant, but the end of the episode as the asteroid hit, the 126 was back at base taking cover and hoping for the best.
The episode was focused on closing a few storylines, and not all in a happy way, it seems. However, there was a bittersweet moment for Tommy.
Tommy gets a surprise reunion in 911: Lone Star season 5, episode 11
For Tommy, the episode starts with her at the doctor for a checkup. Things aren’t good. The tumors are growing, and one is threatening to burst. It’s too close to her heart to operate on, and Tommy is told she should get her girls back from their uncles to say her goodbyes.
When Tommy FaceTimes the twins to ask them to come home, she sees how much fun they’re having. She can’t do it to them. Instead, she decides to not tell them anything and allows them to hang up and get on with their day.
That’s when we get a surprise reunion. Tommy starts crying and then starts coughing. Once she stops, she hears a voice behind her. Charles is there, and that means something heartbreaking for Tommy. She’s run out of time, but it means that she’ll join Charles.
Nobody checks on her by the end of the episode. We’re left with her on the couch, but it’s not clear if she’s just sleeping or if she’s died.
Losing Tommy like this is going to be heartbreaking. There was all this hope that she would beat cancer, but we have to remember that not everyone does. They think they’re making a full recovery only to be delivered a heartbreaking diagnosis. However, it means that Tommy gets to be reunited with Charles. Her daughters will grieve hard, but they are with family who loves and cares for them. One thing is clear in this episode, Tommy never stopped loving Charles even as she fell in love with Trevor. Those first epic loves are always going to last.
TK and Carlos face disappointment in their adoption attempts
For TK and Carlos, there’s more heartache. They start the episode preparing for the social worker to come for their pre-adoption visit. Naturally, TK worries about everything, from the expired Aspirin to the car bed in the living room.
However, that’s not the stuff that comes up for the social worker. It all starts with TK’s past drug abuse, which Carlos worries is going to come up. Carlos is quick to point out that TK is five years sober and attends meetings. That’s not the issue, though, as long as TK is willing to submit himself to random drug testing.
What does come up is their jobs. They both have such dangerous jobs, especially with TK’s wilder-than-a-movie emergency calls, that the social worker can’t recommend them. Jonah has already been traumatized through the loss of both his parents, and she doesn’t want him to risk him going through another traumatic loss due to TK and Carlos’s jobs.
Judd doesn’t want TK to give up just yet. However, the asteroid hitting Austin may lead to problems.
Mateo faces deportation after an incident
Then there’s more heartbreak for Nancy and Mateo in 911: Lone Star. It all starts with them shopping for a plant together, and Mateo brings up the idea of them moving in together and getting married. Nancy makes it clear that she doesn’t believe in marriage.
What is with these types of conversations just happening in the middle of places like this. Why haven’t they had this conversation before? You would have thought it would have come up by now. And yet, Mateo was shocked to find out that Nancy doesn’t believe in marriage, and Nancy was so blasé about how she didn’t believe in marriage.
The conversation is cut short, though. As Mateo reaches for a plant, another man grabs it. A fight breaks out and it turns out that Mateo punched a cop. Sure, the cop punched first, but he doesn’t care and he arrests Mateo.
Fortunately, the police know the cop is a bad egg. That doesn’t make it easier for Mateo’s immigration status, though. He’s always had to stay on the right side of the law, and assaulting a cop, even if the cop started it, is enough to have ICE turn up and deport Mateo. He can leave voluntarily and reapply in two to three years, but it looks like this is it. Mateo and Nancy are going to be split by countries. Will this bring up the marriage conversation again?
Owen is preparing to move back to New York in 911: Lone Star
If you wondered what was going to happen for Owen now that the show was coming to an end, you probably won’t be surprised that the job offer from earlier in the season has come back up. Now that Judd is in recovery and doing well, Owen feels like he can take the deputy commissioner job.
The problem is he’s got to tell everyone else, and that’s not going to be easy. The only thing that he’s saved by is the buzzer. The phones go off with the state-ending event.
Sure enough, an asteroid is hitting. While it’s not confirmed that it will end Texas, people panic and start running. There’s a doomsday prepper that finally gets to use his bunker. When a neighbor rushes over, he refuses to let them come into the bunker with him. However, he eventually agrees to save their daughter. Only, before he’s able to unlock the door, he has a heart attack in the bunker.
It takes the 126 blowing up the bunker from the edge of it to get in to save him. While this could mean the end of everyone, there’s a bit of a happy ending for the neighbors. The ones who stayed to help the doomsday prepper decide they’re staying and cooking burgers on the barbecue. They invite him over, and it looks like there could be some positive relationships between the two families as long as Austin survives.
Will Austin survive? The asteroid comes down with what looks to be a bang. However, as I said at the start, the explosion seemed to be in a nuclear power plant and not at the firehouse. It would suggest that the asteroid isn’t as bad as the warnings seem.
I feel like the show is still rushing things to bring the show to an end. I’m starting to feel like 911: Lone Star didn’t initially get the memo that this would be the last season, and now they’re trying to end everyone’s story far too quickly. It’s a shame that it’s going out like this, to be honest, and I can’t see how anyone can get a happy ending after this episode.
911: Lone Star’s series finale airs on Monday, Feb. 3 at 8/7c on FOX. Catch up the following day on Hulu.
