Accused season 3 isn't looking like at FOX (but not all hope is lost)

Accused remains on the bubble at FOX, but could we see a third season?

After a successful first season, many were excited to see Accused season 2. However, we had to wait an extra year for it due to the writers and actors strike, and when the series did end up arriving, it wasn’t with the same popularity as the first season.

As the show dipped more in the ratings, we worried about its future. Of course, we usually expect to see renewal and cancellation decisions ahead of the Upfronts presentations, but FOX decided not to make all decisions in May.

Accused season 3 isn’t confirmed just yet

FOX shared, as stated by Deadline, that a decision hasn’t yet been fully made on Accused. In other words, season 3 isn’t happening just yet, but that doesn’t mean it will never happen.

For most shows, this would be a death sentence. A long wait for a renewal would usually mean that the series would end up just disappearing. Cast options would end up coming up, and actors would move onto other projects. By the time the show is set to come back, there would need to be a big change, and that isn’t something most networks are willing to risk.

So, what’s the difference with Accused? Michael Thorn, President of Fox Television Network made it clear that it’s due to the nature of the series. There’s a benefit of anthology shows.

Accused could return in the future

Each episode of Accused is a standalone story, and this is a powerful benefit when it comes to delaying renewals. FOX can continue to work with Howard Gordon, who has created the adaptation of the British series of the same name, to see if there are more stories to tell.

As of right now, Gordon doesn’t have them, and that means FOX isn’t renewing the show. However, the talks will still happen.

This is all despite the series sitting at the bottom of all scripted shows on the network in the linear ratings. It suggests that there are some strong streaming figures, or that the show doesn’t cost too much to create compared to other shows.

Accused is available to stream on Hulu.
