Boston Blue has given fans more than a few Blue Bloods cameos already in its first season, but there is one particular cameo fans are desperately hoping for: Tom Selleck.
For 14 seasons, Selleck led the cast of Blue Bloods as New York City Police Commissioner and Reagan family patriarch, Frank Reagan. Selleck was a core part of the show from start to finish and fought incredibly hard to keep the show going after CBS announced its cancellation. While Selleck’s efforts to save the show did not prove fruitful, CBS did choose to keep the franchise alive via Boston Blue, a spinoff centered around Donnie Wahlberg’s character, Danny Reagan.
When CBS first announced the spinoff, fans were immediately eager to see which of Wahlberg’s Blue Bloods co-stars might guest star in the spinoff, and Selleck immediately landed a place at the top of fans’ wishlists.
Thus far, Selleck has not appeared on Boston Blue, but star Mika Amonsen is giving fans renewed hope that the Reagan family patriarch could make a cameo.
“There’s a lot of fans that want to see it happen, and there’s speculation,” Amonsen teased to Page Six, acknowledging that conversations about a cameo from Selleck have “definitely” taken place.
While Amonsen, who plays Selleck’s grandson Sean Reagan (a role played by Andrew Terraciano for all 14 seasons of Blue Bloods), remained tight-lipped about whether a cameo may be coming in Boston Blue season 1, he made it clear he would love to see Selleck guest star.
“I would just be happy he was there,” Amonsen said. “I know how much fans want him to be on the show.”
It would indeed be a major moment for the show to get to see Amonsen and Selleck share the screen together. While Sean was a key part of Blue Bloods, Amonsen is getting to work with the Blue Bloods cast for the first time through Boston Blue after taking over the role of the character in the spinoff.
So far, we’ve gotten to see Amonsen play off several Blue Bloods stars, as season 1 has already featured appearances from Bridget Moynahan and Marisa Ramirez, reprising their respective roles as Erin Reagan-Boyle and Detective Maria Baez. We’ll also get to see Amonsen share the screen with his character’s on-screen grandfather when Len Cariou reprises his role as Henry Reagan in the show’s April 3 episode.
Interestingly, Selleck has not seemed interested in guest starring on Boston Blue when asked about the show in the past. Last November, Selleck hinted that he was unsure of whether he would keep playing Frank now that Blue Bloods was over, making fans wonder if a cameo in Boston Blue was off the table.
“I don’t know if I would do Boston Blue. That’s another show," Selleck told Hour Detroit in November. “I think it’s partly my lot in life to make sure Blue Bloods has its place in television history, but I don’t think it’s my lot in life to keep playing Frank Reagan."
While Selleck has played coy about reprising his role in the spinoff, he’s been very supportive of Wahlberg. In fact, Amonsen noted that Wahlberg is one of the voices “that matter a bit more” when it comes to convincing Selleck to make a cameo. For his part, Wahlberg has made it clear that he wants nothing more than for Selleck to make a guest appearance on the show.
“I can say, would I love for Tom to come up to Boston? Sure. Or would I love Danny to go to New York and visit Frank? Absolutely, yes. Tom’s always going to base his decisions on the work and material, and so yes, of course, I’d love to work with him on the show, and when the time comes, we will hopefully craft an idea that moves his heart and makes him want to do it,” Wahlberg told Parade.
We’ll have to see if Wahlberg is able to convince Selleck to make a cameo, but it seems there have been discussions, and Amonsen is keeping fans’ hope alive rather than closing the door on the possibility of a cameo from Selleck!
With just a few episodes left in its first season, we’ll have to wait to see whether a cameo comes to fruition before the season 1 finale or if we’ll have to keep holding out hope for an appearance. The good news is that Boston Blue is already renewed, so even if the creative team is unable to pull off a cameo from Selleck before season 1 wraps, there is hope Frank Reagan could appear in season 2!
