For the longest time, 911 fans have wanted to see one thing: for Buddie to become canon. Maybe there is a chance for that still to happen in 911 season 9, but that’s not the way the latest comments about a “spiritual awakening” for Eddie reads.
There is a huge Buck and Eddie episode to come, though. We now have a few details about it, and it sounds like it’s going to be an episode that airs around Halloween. However, instead of focusing on Halloween, it’s going to focus on the Mexican day: Día de los Muertos.

Eddie is about to change a little in 911 season 9
Entertainment Weekly brought a small preview of the episode to come, which is going to focus on the Mexican Day of the Dead, which tends to be celebrated around Nov. 1 or Nov. 2 of each year. It’s a day when deceased loved ones are honored and celebrated, which is sure to be important to the 118 this year. After all, they are all mourning the loss of Captain Bobby Nash, and this is going to be a big day to celebrate him and the legacy he has left behind.
According to showrunner Tim Minear, Eddie may have a “spiritual awakening” in where he starts to believe in the supernatural. This is something Buck has always easily believed, as we saw recently when he believed he was cursed—Eddie quickly shut it down, but Tommy did seem to start believing that maybe Buck was right, and Buck certainly believed in the curse.
It’s not clear what will happen to Eddie, but something makes him think that maybe the supernatural has some truth behind it after all. This could be linked to the way the spirits can cross into the land of the living on the days when the veil is at its thinnest. Maybe there are signs that Bobby is still around. After all, we would love to see Bobby’s ghost pop up now and then to help the 118.
“It really opened up for me just some great possibilities for Eddie and I’m really excited about that one. Buck is quick to believe things, but Eddie might be quick to believe things now too. I know he always sort of poo-pooed those things, and kind of walked away from his faith, but I think there may be a spiritual awakening in Eddie’s future.”

What about Buddie happening in 911?
I know that when hearing of a “spiritual awakening” in a Buddie-centric storyline, many will want to see Buddie officially becoming canon. That’s not the way I’m reading things will go, though.
As the show has already stated, Eddie is a straight man. Buck pointed out to Tommy that while he and Eddie are best friends, that’s all it is. They are friends. Of course, people will see what they want to see.
For the record, I just don’t like the toxicity in the fandom that this ship has brought. I cannot support one part of the fandom getting hateful and spouting vitriol to those who either don’t want the ship to happen or are happy seeing other ships happen first. That actually makes me not want a ship to happen because toxicity should never win, and I do hope that the Buddie fans take a step back and see what they are doing and saying beforehand.
There is a lot going on in 911 right now, and Buck has moved out of Eddie’s place now that Eddie is back. A lot has been left unsaid, but there is also a lot of healing to do. Buck needs to learn how to be happy alone and Eddie needs to focus on his relationship with his son before either of them consider anything. Maybe a “spiritual awakening” in terms of believing the supernatural is just a starting point.
911 season 9 premieres on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 8/7c on ABC.
