As we get closer to Thanksgiving, we start to look at the plans for the networks. Some of the shows are already going off the air for the rest of the year, but not all of them. CBS tends to run into December, and this is where we have some potentially terrible news for Matlock fans.

We know that the Matlock season 2 fall finale is coming. So are the fall finales of all other shows on the network, but we weren’t expecting that fall finale to be so soon.

What’s going on with the Matlock schedule?

Matlock season 2 episode 6 will air on Thursday, Nov. 13. After that, it looks like the show will be off the air for the rest of the year. This isn’t confirmed just yet as the CBS schedule only goes up to the week of Thanksgiving, but we’re keeping an eye on things.

The reason we’re thinking the show will air its fall finale is that Elsbeth is on the move. On Thursday, Nov. 20, there will be new episodes of Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, Ghosts, and Elsbeth. Now Matlock sits between the comedy block and Elsbeth, and usually, when there’s a temporary break in the schedule, a rerun will air to keep the schedule the same.

In fact, usually, all the shows would go off at the same time. But this time, Elsbeth is being pulled forward to the 9 p.m. ET/PT timeslot, which will be great for the series. It would suggest that Matlock season 2 episode 6 is the fall finale.

Is production for Matlock season 2 behind schedule?

It does seem odd that Matlock would go off the air before the other three shows that air with it on a Thursday night. So, it would suggest that something has happened.

We know that David Del Rio has been fired, but the original plan was to have Billy in the episodes. Due to the sudden departure it meant that the scripts needed to be rewritten, and this could have led to the show getting behind on production.

Rather than try to rush through episodes before Christmas, it’s possible that Matlock and CBS came to an agreement to change the plan. Now, the show will go off the air earlier than initially planned, but it will return a little earlier. It could have also had fewer episodes than the other Thursday shows, similarly to season 1, and now, with this earlier break in the fall, it means the series can air its finale later with the rest of them.

It's hard to say without a statement from CBS or the show, but as of right now, it looks like Matlock is going off the air for the rest of 2025.
