Sergeant Voight has a fight on his hands when it comes to his team in the Chicago PD season 13 premiere. Of course, he has to go back to his old ways.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for the Chicago PD season 13 premiere.

The premiere opens a month after the events of the Chicago PD season 12 finale, with Trudy Platt checking in on Voight because nobody else is doing it. It doesn’t sound like the rest of Intelligence is against him; just that they’re busy with their new assignments and their lives. Chapman is the only one not returning his calls.

Platt shares that Commander Devlin is at a donor event, and that could be the best way to catch him and get some answers about the future of Intelligence. After all, Devlin said to give him four weeks — well, at least, four weeks, it turns out.

Voight doesn’t get the answer he wants in the Chicago PD season 13 premiere

As the two talk, Voight makes it clear that he needs an answer soon. He’s already lost Kiana Cook, as she got the offer of a permanent position with the 17th. That quickly writes her out of the story, and in a believable way, considering the circumstances.

Meanwhile, Ruzek and Atwater are working their new beats, while Torres and Burgess are still suspended — and Burgess isn’t coping well with that. In fact, Burgess is more than happy to help Voight when a situation arises.

Voight is to respond to active calls, and it’s a dull job for him. However, it does lead to him being around when there’s a drive-by shooting. It doesn’t take him long to realize that this could be a drug or guns situation, and Voight will do whatever it takes to get answers, much against Devlin’s orders.

He initially calls in Ruzek to help get some answers at a bar about a brown SUV. One guy isn’t happy about the questions Ruzek is answering, and that leads to a fight almost breaking out. The girl he’s with breaks up the fight, and she ends up being taken outside by Ruzek and Voight, where she shares that she’s ATF. This is Eva Imani, and she is not someone who likes to play with the team.

This is when Voight calls Burgess in, as it’s clear that Imani doesn’t want to work with anyone and she isn’t sticking around to give “a patrol sergeant” answers. Voight gets Burgess to follow her, which is the right thing to do considering the man ends up meeting Imani at her place and then attacks her and almost kills her. Burgess rushes in to try to help, but also ends up close to being attacked, leading to Voight shooting him.

Voight and Imani work a case together

Devlin isn’t happy to find out that Voight is working a case that isn’t his, but Imani makes it clear that she needs his help to track down the guy that she’s after: Raptor. The man killed is D Hart and is working with the gunrunner, who is responsible for 23 deaths. One of those is someone Voight had come to care for in the last month, a grandmother who ended up hit in the earlier attack.

And so, the two end up working the case together. We get a good look at Imani’s attitude. She cares about the job, but she’s not interested in making friends. Her focus is on getting justice.

She does get a look at the way Voight, Ruzek, and Atwater are able to work together. It’s clear that there’s a part of her that would like that, but she’s not willing to admit it. She’s likely been burned too much before.

In the end, Imani and Voight are able to track down some dummy plates from an attack, and this leads them to a building where there are a bunch of guns stored. On top of that, Imani finds Raptor’s computer and cell phone number, so she can get a ping on the phone.

As the two follow Raptor, Imani gets a clear order to stand down and not move in on Raptor. She knows that he’s a flight risk, though, so she’s not about the follow that order. And neither is Voight. They end up taking down Raptor (alive!) and Imani asks that Voight does the booking because the ATF will just make a deal with him. She’s not letting him get back out on the streets.

Voight would like a favor from her, and we know that it’s going to be the way to get Intelligence back together.

Voight uses old tactics to get his team back in Chicago PD

Some of the guns that Voight found were important. When Devlin shares that he will never give Voight his team back, Voight shares some of the photos of the guns he took. He got the ATF to rush a check on them, and they all link back to the CPD.

It turns out that Devlin was part of a team to sign off on some stolen guns without reporting them. After all, it would look embarrassing, right? Well, Voight makes it clear that if he doesn’t get his team back, the news about the guns will be leaked, and that’s career over for Devlin.

I don’t blame Voight for this. He needs to keep this information, though, as I could see Devlin trying something to take down Intelligence in the future.

There’s hope at the end, though, as Voight goes back to his old stomping ground. Imani joins him, sharing that she’s been booted from the ATF and needs to find something new. She is going to leave town and figure something out, but Voight encourages her to stop running. While he won’t beg for her to join the team, it is open if she would like to take the empty spot. She says she will ‘just for a while.’

And with that, the Chicago PD season 13 premiere closes out with Burgess and Torres getting their badges back. All is right in the world of One Chicago again.

Chicago PD airs on Wednesdays at 10/9c on NBC.
