Things aren't looking good for Citadel season 2 with the recent production update

Citadel season 2 was slated for fall 2025, but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

Citadel season 1 brought plenty of anticipation, but it didn’t quite live up to expectations. Now there are reports that make it sound like Citadel season 2 could end up being the final season, and that’s even if fans get to see it.

The Russo brothers spy series wrapped filming back in November 2024, with an expected premiere date in fall 2025. However, Amazon MGM is not happy with what they’ve seen of the series so far, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

When could Citadel season 2 premiere on Prime Video?

As of right now, it looks like we may not get the season later this year as hoped. It’s looking more and more likely that the series will be pushed into 2026, because Amazon MGM is worried about the series, especially with its ballooning budget.

This has become one of the most expensive shows for the streamer, but it didn’t get the reception that Amazon would have wanted. While The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power did get some negative reviews, there was a lot of praise for the graphics and the development of the look of the world. This helped keep eyes on it for season 2, and now it’s got a third season coming.

Citadel didn’t get the same praise in any aspect of the show. The franchise itself has had mixed reviews, with Citadel: Diana being the most positively reviewed of the three shows so far.

Could reshoots happen for Citadel season 2?

If the Amazon MGM execs are unhappy with the series so far, it’s possible that there will be reshoots. This is going to lead to a higher cost for the series, though, so the execs will want to limit them as much as possible.

It all depends on how much Amazon wants this show to succeed at this point. With taking over the James Bond franchise, it’s possible that they could decide to drop this franchise and focus on something new. Is that disappointing for those who put all their work into the series? Absolutely! The problem is the series has lost its biggest backer in the execs with Jennifer Salke leaving as the streamer’s creative head.

What I do think is that this will be the final season, and we could see the international franchise scrapped from this point. Citadel just didn’t hit the way it was supposed to.

Citadel and its spin-offs are available to stream on Prime Video.
