The first season of Countdown has now officially come to an end. All eyes are on the future, and whether Countdown season 2 is going to happen.
Prime Video is yet to make a decision about the future. While Derek Haas was hopeful about the series continuing, we’re on the worried side at this point in time. Of course, no news is good news right now, and all we can do is wait.
And speculate. We’re going to speculate.
Countdown season 1 ended with a major cliffhanger
In terms of story, we need Countdown season 2 to happen. Everything ended with Oliveras running away from “Todd,” who made it clear that he was going to shoot her. Honestly, I’m still not sure why she wasn’t running in a zig-zag pattern.
The task force had arrested someone, but not the right guy. Deep down, Meachum knows something isn’t right. Blythe likely knows it as well. Yet, here we are with them not even thinking that Oliveras is in trouble.
And so, we’re left with a major cliffhanger. There’s no doubt that we need a second season, and Haas was likely hoping that a cliffhanger would force Amazon’s hand.
Prime Video may end up canceling Countdown
We just have to look at the past actions to see the direction that Amazon is likely to take with the future of this series. When it’s a show that Amazon has a lot of hope for, there are early renewals. Sometimes, those early renewals have come ahead of seasons premiering, such as Cross, and in other occasions they’ve come after just a few episodes, such as Reacher.
That’s not happened with Countdown. With a 13-episode season, there has been plenty of time for Amazon to renew the show, allowing work to get started. The fact that it hasn’t suggests that the ratings haven’t been as strong as needed to see this show continue. That’s the part that has me worried, as it feels more like On Call rather than Reacher.
I want to say that I’m wrong, and that Amazon was just waiting to see how a 13-episode season would do when most shows are eight-to-10 episodes per season. However, things aren’t looking great for Countdown season 2.
