I hate that our first fears when there are dogs (or really any animals) in crime dramas is whether they will die or not. As soon as I saw the dogs in We Were Liars, I feared for them.

In the novel by E. Lockhart, there are five golden retrievers. Three of them belong to Cady and Penny, and they are all very well trained. Two of them belong to Harris, and he hasn’t spent any time in training them. We only see the two untrained golden retrievers in We Were Liars on Prime Video.
During the We Were Liars penultimate episode, we finally learn what Cady and the other Liars did on that fateful night of Summer Sixteen. If you remembered that there were two drugged-up dogs shut in the laundry room, you’ll have worried about whether anyone remembered that they were there.
Cadence realizes the dogs are trapped in We Were Liars
Sure enough, all four Liars forgot about the dogs. The rest of the staff had gone home, so those poor dogs had been locked in the laundry room all day and night. They were also trapped in that room when the Liars started the fire.
Cadence ran outside from the flames, only to turn back as she heard the dogs barking. She suddenly remembered that they were locked in the laundry room, and she tried desperately to get back to them. However, there was something blocking the door, and the fire had spread so quickly that it was in the laundry room.
In the end, Cady had to get out, or she’d perish in the fire as well. The dogs were left behind, leaving us with a haunting memory in We Were Liars.
Harris has new dogs at the end of We Were Liars
Honestly, I just wish Harris hadn’t got new dogs. They were completely untrained, and he didn’t even care about putting the work in. Yet, when we get to Summer Seventeen as Cady remembers everything, we see that he has two puppies.
It’s clear that Harris has replaced his two lost dogs. There are a couple of moments where, clearly in his dementia, he forgets that his two golden retrievers died. He goes to throw a ball, and then he realizes that the two dogs aren’t there. Considering the type of man that he is, I don’t have much sympathy for him, but I do feel for the two dogs in We Were Liars,
