The Down Cemetery Road season 1 premiere threw plenty of information and pieces of the puzzle our way, with the promise that future episodes would start making sense of things. Episode 3 clarified some things while opening many more questions.

Episode 2 left us wondering mostly what happened to Sarah and who the man who kept following her around town and ultimately helped her really is. Down Cemetery Road season 1 episode 3 sheds some light on that, while also clarifying who Rufus truly is.

Did Sarah survive in Down Cemetery Road season 1 episode 3?

The episode starts with Amos, Hamza's man, cleaning Sarah's house, erasing all the evidence of Rufus's (Axel's) involvement. It leads viewers to believe Sarah dies, and Amos is even seen cutting up a body — without the gory details, thankfully.

It takes a while for us to learn that Sarah is alive, and the body Amos was disposing of was that of Rufus, a.k.a. Axel, his brother. We hear Sarah screaming from the back of a van and wonder for a bit: Has Amos kidnapped her? Soon enough, we learn that Downey, the man who saved her, took her away "for her own protection".

She decides the wise thing to do is to play nice and stay with Downey. But he's not going to tell her who he is or what his connection to Dinah or the government is. Panicked, Sarah seizes a moment at a gas station shop to steal a woman's phone and tries to call Mark for help.

Before she can say a thing, she overhears Mark and Emma's conversation and understands her husband is having an affair. As if she needed any more problems. She lies low until she and Downey reach a hotel. There, she catches a moment while he's in the shower to call Zoe. How will Zoe help her get out of that situation? We'll have to wait for the next episode to see.

Down Cemetery Road is a TV crime drama unlike the rest — it's a suspenseful thriller first, and an investigation second. So it's no surprise that things are ambiguous and misleading.

Down Cemetery Road season 1 episode 3 deepens Zoe's character

While Sarah is busy trying to figure out a way to get away from Downey and back to Oxford, Zoe is getting into full investigative mode. She sees "Rufus" on a security camera from a nearby shop and is convinced he's the man who killed her husband.

Naturally, she goes to talk to Sarah about it, only to find the house empty and sniff the bleach and fresh paint in the air. In her attempt to find Sarah, she goes to London and follows Mark around, learning about his affair before Sarah does. She films them for leverage and exposes him in his office. How I loved that!

Zoe is determined to find Axel, not knowing there's no one left to find, and Sarah. She doesn't know what happened yet, but presumably Sarah will fill her in on the phone, as best she can without Downey hearing.

Will Downey finally explain who he really is? Could he end up working with Sarah and Zoe to find Dinah? Hopefully, Down Cemetery Road season 1 episode 4 will have answers when it drops on Wednesday, Nov. 12, on Apple TV.
