High Potential returned with an episode that makes it clear you need to remember the rice. Take a look at the events of High Potential season 1, episode 8.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS from High Potential season 1, episode 8.

After a lengthy break, Morgan and Karadec were back in the action. After a girl turned up not so dead on the beach (she went through what is known as the Lazarus Effect), the two need to figure out who attacked her.

Of course, the boyfriend is the first suspect, but it turns out that the boyfriend didn’t know who the girl even was. She wasn’t Heather Wallace, as she said she was. Her name was Penny Hall, and the team had to figure out what she was hiding to find out who attacked her.

Penny needed to get answers about her deceased boyfriend in High Potential season 1, episode 8

It didn’t take long to get to the bottom of what Penny was doing. Thanks to her landlord, everyone learned that she was investigating the murder of her boyfriend, Lucas. He was a tennis coach at the beach club that the current guy she was fake dating went to. She got with the guy to get into the club so she could do her research, sure that he was killed by one of them.

With that information, they were all able to figure out that Lucas had found out that a woman name Shelby was having an affair with Blaine, the brother of the manager of the beach club. Blaine and Lucas had some bad blood, and he wasn’t certain that Lucas would keep quiet about the affair despite Shelby giving Lucas the real diamond necklace that her husband had given her to mark 10 years of marriage.

Of course, there were a few red herrings along the way. It’s always easy to tell when the suspects are red herrings. They just help to lead Morgan and Karadec to the real suspect, giving clues as to the real personalities of other people. Fortunately, the show doesn’t stick with these red herring suspects for too long, allowing us to take our minds off them.

Who killed Lucas and tried to kill Penny in High Potential?

So, who killed Lucas? It took a night of Chinese food at Karadec’s apartment to get to the bottom of it. Even then, they didn’t quite get to the bottom of it. This was just a great chance to see Karadec’s home, which was as bare as we expected, and see the two colleagues bond a little more. I’ve got to say, I’m not on the side of wanting these two together. I want to see them remain platonic friends because they work so well together.

It's as Morgan leaves that she figures it out. It all came back to the rice in Lucas’s hair. Morgan made sure that this was important to remember, and while Karadec joked about it at one point, he knew that it was going to end up being important. There was a reason Morgan’s brain settled on that.

It wasn’t rice. It was the white things in snow globes, and suddenly, Morgan worked it all out. Eddie, Blaine’s brother, would do anything he could to protect Blaine. While he wouldn’t cover up murder, he would kill for his brother. Of course, it was all circumstantial evidence, but Eddie didn’t know that. When he saw the cops turning up at the beach club, he ran and he made it clear that he was guilty.

With him behind bars, Morgan was able to return to Penny at the hospital to tell her that Lucas’s killer was caught. It’s a win for Penny.

Soto has an update about Roman in the High Potential season 1 midseason premiere

This case was on the personal side for Morgan, but not for the reasons Soto thought. Morgan has come to terms with Roman just leaving, but Ava believes her dad abandoned her because he didn’t want her. Morgan wants Ava to have the peace to know that Roman wasn’t a bad guy.

Soto has been doing a lot of digging, but it’s taken time to get information. There’s just so little in a missing person case after 15 years. However, Soto has something, and she calls Morgan in while Morgan is on a date with Tom (which was going well despite Morgan pretty much ghosting him all case!) to share an update.

In the weeks leading up to his disappearance, Roman talked to a man named Gio Conforth, who was known as a concierge. This guy could get anything on either side of the law, so what did Roman want? That’s something Soto needs to figure out, and she needs to get to Gio to find that out. She knows where he is, but when and how will she get to him?

I love that this case hasn’t taken over the series. It’s too old for it to take over, but Soto has made it clear that she’s worked in the shadows to get Morgan the answers she should have gotten 15 years ago. This isn’t just for Morgan now. Soto is also doing this for Ava.

High Potential airs on Tuesdays at 9/8c on ABC. Catch up the following day on Hulu.
