Intelligence is in a rough shape in Chicago PD season 13 (but one couple offers brightness)

Chicago PD will kick off season 13 with the Intelligence Unit in a bad place but thankfully one couple provides some needed light!

Chicago P.D. ended season 12 on a somber note for some couples. Thankfully, Chicago PD season 13 still has a few romances to ground the series.

Chicago PD season 12 ended with Hank Voight crossing the line like never before. As corrupt boss, Deputy Chief Reid, continued to target the squad, having Torres arrested and Burgess suspended, Hank was pressed by prosecutor (and potential girlfriend) Chapman to take him down by the book.

But as Reid kept hitting, Voight let it slip out to a young man that Reid was responsible for the death of his mobster father. Just as Reid and Voight were heading into a meeting that likely would have shut the Intelligence Unit down, that young man shot and killed Reid.

That ended the whole investigation to save the Unit. But at Ruzek and Burgess’ wedding, Chapman confronted Voight on what he’d done and made it clear they seemed finished.

That leads into Chicago PD season 13 as showrunner Gwen Sigan shared with TVLine that the season opens with Chapman no longer answering Voight’s calls or showing up to help the team. As for their romance, “all hope is lost” even as they try to stay professional.

Sigan added that as the season opens, “we find our unit really scattered. They’re disbanded.” That’s likely going to be how the show writes off Kiana Cook, as Toya Turner won’t be returning after just one season.

But just because it looks dark now doesn’t mean it will stay that way on Chicago PD!

There is hope for romance in Chicago PD

Sigan quickly assured fans that there will be some lighter stuff this season. That includes Ruzek and Burgess, who are still in their honeymoon stage (even if it’s up in the air if they had an actual honeymoon) and are the unit’s “solid rock.” That's great news, as those two have been through so many ups and downs over the years; they need some good times to happen to them at last.

Sigan also teased some fun romantic entanglements “with a little bit of weirdness.” That sounds strange, yet it could be tied into Torres trying to get himself back on track with Sigan promising he’s seeking “a new purpose, a new level of fulfillment, and a new level of something that can provide him steadiness.”

That might mean a romance which Torres could use, although he’s likely wary, as sleeping with a CI got him arrested. It also sounds like Atwater may get a bit more in his love life with psychologist Valerie "Val" Soto, which gives him an overdue spotlight. And of course, there’s also the reliable relationship of Trudy and her fireman husband, Mouch, in the background.

So, as Chicago PD is set for season 13, things will start rough but hopefully lighten up as the series plays on.

Chicago PD season 13 premieres on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 10/9c on NBC.
