While there is a lot of focus on Jensen Ackles in the new Prime Video series Countdown, Tracker fans have wanted to know if he’ll return to that series for season 3. Russell Shaw is needed in the story, and there is some great news.

Ackles did originally give some disappointing updates about his return in Tracker season 3, almost hinting that it wasn’t going to happen. To be honest, with his promotional work for Countdown, filming for The Boys season 5, and work on the upcoming Vought Rising series, he’s a busy man. The idea of him fitting in time for Tracker was a little crazy.

But crazy is as crazy does. This man loves his work, and he is returning in Tracker.

“Ontological Shock” – When Colter suddenly disappears during his search for a missing father, Reenie recruits his brother, Russell (Jensen Ackles), for help, on the CBS Original series TRACKER, Sunday, Oct. 20 (8:30-9:30 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+ (live and on-demand for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, or on-demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day after the episode airs)*. Jensen Ackles will be in at least 1 episode of Tracker season 3

Ackles took to Instagram to share his return to the CBS crime drama. He didn’t mention it by name, because he was also promoting Countdown, but there was no need to. He tilted the camera up to show the name on his trailer, which was Russell. Then he twisted the camera to show the name on the trailer next to him, Colter.

Yes, Russell and Colter Shaw are going to be back together on the screen, and that simply makes sense when you consider the storyline. At the end of Tracker season 2, Colter learned that his mom was involved in the murder of his father. Considering she tried to almost pin it on Russell by telling Colter to stay away from him, Colter is surely going to let his older brother know what happened.

The question now is whether Ackles will be in more than one episode. He didn’t say just how many episodes he’ll appear in, and since his time will be short, one episode may be all that they’ve been able to fit in.

“Klamath Falls” – Colter Shaw, a lone-wolf survivalist who roams the country as a reward seeker, using his expert tracking skills to help private citizens and law enforcement solve all manner of mysteries while contending with his own fractured family. In the premiere episode, Colter’s handlers, Velma and Teddi Bruin, send him to Klamath Falls, Ore., to investigate the disappearance of 14-year-old Gil Brown who is suspected to have been taken by his birth dad with a criminal background. Tracker season 3 is going to feel very different

We’re certainly going to need Ackles in at least one episode, as the season as a whole is going to feel different. Just recently, we learned that two OG cast members are leaving. Both Abby McEnany and Eric Graise are exiting the show, and while it’s not completely surprising with season 2 storylines, it is disappointing.

Justin Hartley and Fiona Rene are the only two original cast members left, although Chris Lee will be back, as he stepped in to help Colter in the second season and seemed to quickly form a bond with him. Colter is going to need some sort of tech support.

Wendy Crewson is also expected to return in the third season, reprising her role as Mary Shaw, and that’s especially needed. Maybe we could have all the Shaw siblings confronting their mother about the lies she’s told over the years. It’s time for all three to appear on the screen together, if Melissa Roxburgh can make it work with her Hunting Party schedule.

Tracker returns on Sunday, Oct. 19 at 8/7c on CBS.
