Lauren Lyle is back as Karen Pirie, and there’s a new cold case to solve. This one involves an abduction rather than murder, and there are far more twists and turns than the first season brought us. You will not want to miss a beat of Karen Pirie season 2.

The second season follows the 1984 abduction of Caitriona Grant, a wealthy oil heiress who was taken with her infant son, Adam. While there were originally ransom notes sent out, the kidnappers went eerily quiet, and the two were never seen again.

This doesn’t mean they were killed, although Cat’s dad is ready for that news. However, the case seems long forgotten about until there’s a new clue that turns up. The body of the man who abducted Cat in the first place. Now Karen is on the case!

Karen Pirie season 2 release schedule

Like with the first season, there are only three episodes in Karen Pirie season 2. This is bad news for those who love long 20+ seasons of TV, but for those who are like me and love well-told stories that are on the shorter side, this is perfect.

Each episode is 90 minutes long, so it does end up feeling like a five- or six-episode story in the end. The great thing about it is that there’s enough time for story and character development, but everything remains contained on the case. There’s no need to explore other cases, and we get some twisty drama thrown in. Not everything is as it seems.

The first episode of Karen Pirie season 2 is now out, and you can see from the table below when the next episodes will be out.

Which book is Karen Pirie season 2 based on?

If you want to read the book before finishing the TV series, you’ll need to turn to Val McDermid’s series about the female cop. This season follows A Darker Domain, which is the second book in the story. While the first season moved the time of the case up from the 1970s to the 1990s, the second season has kept it focused on the 1980s due to the miners’ strike in Scotland at the time.

There is one change to the story, and that’s the type of fortune Cat comes from. Her dad, Sir Broderick Grant, is a property magnate in the book. In the TV series, he makes his money from oil, which is important when connected to the miners’ strike and the North Sea oil boom at the time.
