Law & Order: Special Victims Unit just came up with a unique solution for a real-life legal issue that could have derailed an upcoming episode. How will it handle the Timothy Busfield episode after it was pulled?

Law & Order has always rested on “ripped from the headlines” stories, but they inadvertently got involved in a real-life case. That was when they had to pull the planned January 15, 2026, episode when guest star Timothy Busfield was arrested on accusations of sexual assault on a minor.

The episode, titled “Corrosive,” was to have Busfield as a judge who’s attacked, leading to the revelation of secrets in his past. This would have been Busfield’s second appearance on the show, as he appeared in the season 13 episode “Russian Brides” and directed two episodes.

The episode was pulled and it seemed unlikely it would air. However, TV Insider reports that the episode will air, but without Busfield. Instead, the role of the judge will be played by David Zayas of Dexter fame.

There’s no word yet on when the episode will air, with the likelihood in the spring. It’s a major change for this episode, but very good reasons why NBC is going ahead with it.

How will the new star affect this SVU episode?

The key reason NBC is going ahead with this change is that the episode had already been filmed, produced, and ready to air when the Busfield mess occurred. That costs a lot in production, and NBC hates to have wasted that much money. Not airing the episode also costs them advertising dollars, always vital for a network show.

It also affects the set episode count for the season, which has a “trickle-down” effect on the salaries/residuals of the actors. They may argue not being paid for an episode they already filmed breaks some contract rules. It’s a complex situation, so keeping the main episode and making some fixes is best.

The logical idea is that the scenes with Busfield will be reshot with Zayas now in the part. The already completed scenes without Busfield will no doubt remain so rather than refilm the entire story, SVU only needs to redo a few scenes.

Zayas is a decent replacement. The actor is best known for his role as the tough cop Angel Batista in the Dexter franchise. FBI fans will also know him as the notorious drug lord Antonio Vargas. Zayas also made an appearance on SVU in the third-season episode “Protection.”

It’s a wild situation, yet this isn’t a bad backup plan as audiences get to see the episode without Busfield being a huge distraction. Zayas should be good in the guest-star role and up for the challenge of participating in this emergency plan. As for Busfield, the actor is currently out on bond and has denied the charges.

So SVU fans will get to see this story even if it’s a reminder that real life is truly stranger than fiction.

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit will return with new episodes on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 9/8c on NBC.
