NBC has been slow on the renewals and cancellations in the 2024–2025 TV season. Law & Order: SVU is one show that remains undecided, but there are many expecting to see its renewal.
The Mariska Hargitay-led series is the longest-running Law & Order series. In fact, it’s one of the longest-running shows on network TV in the history of said network TV. With the linear ratings remaining steady and the cast still wanting to bring more stories to the viewers, there’s no doubt that we’ll get to see more of this. Now we just wait for NBC to renew the series.
There’s a historic showrunner change coming to Law & Order: SVU season 27
Deadline reports that there will be another showrunner change. This series isn’t a stranger to showrunner changes, with it having eight different showrunners in the last 26 seasons. David Graziano currently holds the position, which he will keep until the end of the season.
After that, there’s another change coming. Michele Fazekas will step into the role for the expected 27th season. This is a historic moment, as she is the first female showrunner on the procedural crime drama.
Don’t worry; this isn’t someone coming in for the sake of making history. Fazekas has experience with the series itself, serving as writer and co-executive producer between 2001 and 2006. She also comes with showrunner experience, as she is the co-showrunner on Gen V, the spin-off of Eric Kripke’s The Boys. She’ll step up as solo showrunner for the second season.

When will Law & Order: SVU season 27 be confirmed?
As of right now, there’s no date on when we can expect to hear about the renewal. It’s likely coming within the next couple of weeks.
What’s the deal with the delay? It’s likely linked to negotiations. The cost of TV is consistently rising, and networks need to find a way to save on the costs. This often leads to contract negotiations, especially at this point in a TV series as the contract renewals for the cast are usually only a year or two at a time. Last season, saw all cast members expect Hargitay agree to take some time off for episodes here and there to help save on the budget, and that could be being worked on again for season 27 as it’s one of the easiest ways to save on money.
Another option could be to look at reducing the episode count. Cutting out two or three episodes doesn’t affect too much in terms of storytelling for a traditionally 22-episode season, but it does help to save considerably in the budget.
Law & Order: SVU airs on Thursdays at 9/8c on NBC.
