I fear that Matlock is dragging the tension between Matty and Olympia. Matlock season 2 episode 4 shows that the two are on the same side, but are they really?
Caution: This post contains SPOILERS from Matlock season 2 episode 4.
At the end of Matlock season 2 episode 3, Matty realized that she needed to give up a little control. That meant aligning herself with Olympia in the fight to take down Senior. However, there is something that doesn’t quite sit right, as the show continues to develop the tension between the two women. It’s time to just put them on the same side to show how powerful they are together.

Matty wants to connect with a woman from Senior’s past in Matlock season 2 episode 4
The episode sees Matty and Olympia struggling to trust each other after everything they’ve already done to one another, and that’s not surprising. I don’t mind the lack of trust, but I need for them to see that they are on the same side.
Matty decides that a way to bring Senior down is to contact people from his past. One of those people is Debra Palmer, a woman who may know the secrets of the Wellbrexa case. I love that Debra is played by Melanie Lynskey, who is Jason Ritter’s real-life wife, but Debra isn’t giving up any details just yet. They will meet again, though. Even at their second meeting, Debra doesn’t give up any details, and it’s hard to tell if she’s just a bit flaky or if she knows that Matty is up to something.
When Debra blocks Matty’s number, it’s pretty clear that Debra knew that Matty was up to something. Now they’ll need to figure out what she’s hiding, and why she would protect Senior.

At the same time, Olympia needs to keep Julian in line. He’s fed up of taking orders, and he wants to quit the firm, but Olympia needs him in place. She needs him to keep playing the long game to bring Senior down.
Julian does end up finding out that Matty is the one who leaked the information, though. This is the problem that Matty and Olympia have, as it could blow up their whole situation. However, this ending does tell me that Matty and Olympia are on the same side, as Olympia has come straight to Matty for help.

Alfie has a proposition for his grandparents
Meanwhile, Alfie is desperate to know his father, and he wants to feel some sort of connection to him. He decides to ask his grandparents about learning how to fix motorcycles, as that’s something Joey was apparently interested in. It’s this need to have something in common with his dad, and I can understand him completely.
I also understand Matty and Edwin’s viewpoint, though. They just want to protect him, and it leads to Matty thinking back to Ellie when she was pregnant with Alfie. Matty didn’t really believe her daughter was sober.
It’s not just Alfie who is making Matty think of Ellie. As Billy prepares for the sonogram for his baby, Matty thinks back to Ellie getting her scan and the silly fake names they came up with. There are a few other flashbacks that involve Matty not sure her daughter was telling the truth about her sobriety, which all makes sense with the doubt of Joey. All she wants is to protect her grandson, but she’s also mourning this loss.
Matlock airs on Thursdays at 9/8c on CBS.
